What kind of ?juniper? tree is this?

This is a volunteer - maybe 8 - 10 years? There are no cones. I assume because it is still young. It does not match any type of juniper on my property (or neighbors to my knowledge). It has stayed a soft green color as temps have cooled. It is approx 5' tall to the top of the leader. The leader appears to have scales. It is wide and spreading. branches relatively flattish. somewhat open.

I have used three plant finder apps - to no avail. Not only do they not agree with each other, when I put the photos through them again - they don't even agree with themselves.

I'd like a better idea what it is to know just how big it's going to get. (there are two nandina's next to it that I'm ripping out.)

Looks like Juniperus virginiana with a mix of juvenile and mature foliage.

Thanks for your input. A picket fence definitely is not our style and would not blend well with the neighborhood. We will be putting a few skinny trees in at the uphill corner of the lot towards the street. They will be set back several feet so the line of sight isn't destroyed for our neighbors backing out of their driveway. Underplanted will be various drought-tolerant perennials. I'm not a huge fan of annuals. I'm not sure why I need to "frame the grass" with bricks? At some point we may put in a mowing strip of natural stones, but that is not a priority at this point. I'm considering putting in a dry stream bed leading to something of a rain garden to help deal with some of the water issues that we are currently experiencing and that I expect to compound with removal of the junipers.

why do you want to know...??? many J's can be rooted ... if you have some itch to have this exact plant ... research dirrs tome on propagation of woody plants as a starting point .... if you root cuttings.. in the proper season.. the name becomes irrelevant ... ken ps: yeah.. dont argue with resin .. he's been collecting pine cones.. nomenclature and knowledge since he was pre teen ... he's our guru .... though i do note.. he qualified his answer ...

That's not a juniper but a Lawson cypress. It's the Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Ellwoodii'. You've to prune the drooping branches one by one till be base were it started to droop. After doing this your specimens will look fine. Good luck and please show us a pic after you finished this job.

Too late for this tree, but not for the next one :). Yes you probably watered too often and shouldn't have kept it inside. But there's a lot more to learn so do some real research (don't just call up one site that sells them please - you won't get useful help that way).

welcome to the forums... it usually helps if you let us know where you are ...

this is a weird plant .. ion some areas.. its NEARLY INVASIVE ... in others.. its a native.. go figure on that ...

i see it along unmown roadways everywhere in my SE MI ... and down south... its the production tree associated with cedar chips.. cedar bark.. and fencing... as in split rail fences ...

they are cute little fuzzy blue things when young.. but when the get to 8 or 10 feet ... they can get pretty ugly ... . from a gardeners perspective ... especially if grown in shade ...

and are a host of cedar rust ... which is one of the most bizarre things you every see hanging on a tree.. lol ....

ps: free thing that seed them selves into your garden.. are usually problem plants.. mostly because they seed themselves everywhere ... keep your eye out for 1 to 3 inch babes.. and you might be surprised how many you start noticing ....
