Well, I need to look around and find another one of these in my yard (I had several). I dug up the biggest one because it was right next to the foundation and was almost 5 feet tall and it is now acting like it's going to die. I think there's hope that it will survive, but need to wait for it to recover. Once I find one, I can see if it does feel rough or smooth. You know you can never find these things when you are looking for them! I walked around for a little while today but the smoke from the south Georgia fires was blowing up here again and it was hard to stay outside for long.

I believe it's semi evergreen, the trunk is dark and has deep scales, open spread, someone said it looks like a bottomland post oak, but the acorns are bigger and the branches aren't twisted like a post oak

It's rubra. I have that leaf etched in my mind. Agree with Embothrium.... last years acorn caps on the ground or full acorns in combination with leaf is key to identification for most folks. The most serious of folks and experts know the buds, too. Dax
