Susi, Im still talking about this place we visited while on Maui. Please visit there if possible. Please read the map really good before going there. I know a couple that never made the trip. The sign's are easy to miss if your not paying attention you will miss the turn. The road getting up there is filled with curves and hills. We stay at a private condo when we visit Maui. The condo is located in the Kaanapali Royal village. Our condo was facing the pacific. The condo was clean, updated, HUGE master bath. We were also within walking distance from Whaler's Village shopping village. Our family has been going to this same condo for at least 15 years. I hope that I helped you. Aloha! My husband and I just got back from a week in Honolulu and had such fun we're already planning a trip for this October for about 10 days to Kauai and Maui. We've been to Kauai before, but not to Maui. We'd LOVE to find out about PRIVATE gardens we might visit. Any suggestions? They don't have to be big, fancy gardens - we just want to talk to local gardeners, see what's in their backyards. Mahalo for any info you can provide. Also, we'd prefer to rent a small house rather than stay in a hotel (we've done this 3-4 times before and it worked out great). Any suggestions? Susi

Oh my goodness, are you in for a treat. I hope this reaches you before you leave. I've vacationed on Kauai for the past 15 years, although I've been gardening only for about 6 of those. There are two NTBG sites on Kauai, one on the south side of the island (Allerton Gardens, in Poipu) and one on the north side (Lawai). Both are well worth a visit. Lawai is representative of more traditional Hawaiian flora; it took a big hit from Iniki but has recovered and reopened.There are self-guided tours. Allerton Gardens only offers guided tours, be sure to book in advance through your hotel or look them up in the phone book. Enjoy, enjoy. I envy you!
