Evil Yellowjackets
Comments (7)My yard has a pear tree and at this time of year the tree is dropping tons of fruit. You learn pretty quick to be very careful about picking anything up off the ground. The yellowjackets and bald faced hornets will attack if they aren't drunk on rotting fruit. Last year I had many yellow jacket nests - it made it impossible to mow the lawn and clear the weeds (the excuse I will stick to for the moment). This year I only see one nest and that tribe has been very well behaved, and so far no one has been stung. An easy trap is to take a bucket or bowl that holds many inches of water (deep) and lay a thin board of stick across the top with a piece of very ripe fruit either from a string or stabbed on the stick. The YJ are not the best at landing when they come in for the feast and most of them will end up in the water and drown (do not attempt to save them! they will sting you while you perform CPR). Earlier in the year rotting meat works best in traps - they are mostly hunting for caterpillars to feed their babies. This time of year, fruity flavors are preferred so overripe fruit works best....See Morebad place for a bird nest
Comments (11)wow, Tony...what a MESS !!! ewwww. But, hey...did ya see that artwork down by the river...!!!?????? By the way, if you're driving, Tony, and want to see some very neat bit of nature..get to US 641 and then go South on 453. An area there that is called The Land Between the Lakes offers a beautiful drive...complete with a bison and elk preserve. It was the best 'wrong turn' we have ever taken in our travels! ...worth the extra time. There's supposed to be some excellent restaurant in that area, but we never did find it...we did love that drive down through Golden Pond, tho...... Hope you're having a grand time! I'm sure Mary Beth is just beside herself there in Paduca!...See MoreYellowjackets..

Sealing "the" entrance hole will do noting since they already have another means of egress and can easily make more as needed. Pouring gasoline on and lighting that does little since the nest is deep enough that the heat from the resulting fire won't reach it, and since it is illegal to dump petroleum products in that way could result in serious trouble for you. The single best way of dealing with these buggers is to put some Sevin around the entrance holes in a way so that the returning wasps need to walk through it to gain entry and will haul the Sevin down into the nest where it will poison those down there, including the queen. Now the good thing is that even if you do nothing this year they will not use the same nest next year....See Moreunderground nest, hornet/wasp/yellowjacket?
Comments (8)You guys got off easy ! These are THE most vicious of all bees I have encountered in my years. I ran over a nest once with a bush hog and got 26 stings all over every exposed area until finally outrunning them. They are super aggressive. I do not know their official name but I call them ground bees or yellow jackets. They typically occupy abandoned mole tunnels. Usually they get stirred up and many of them find you before you realize they are even around. Not only vicious they sting many times and keep on stinging. My solution has worked every time: pour about 1/4 pint of gasoline in the hole from a narrow neck bottle or some handy spouted container. Then toss a match onto it. The result is not what you might expect. There is a flame 6" or so high that just burns for quite a while. The vicious $%^& try to fly back in the hole and most are burned in the attempt. The ones inside never make it out. A day later none will be found. I agree with others that bug spray is useless except for 1 or 2 caught alone....See Moresequoia54
