I'd like to hear more thoughts on jujube size. I've only had lang jujubes (which despite their reputation as merely a drying type I thought were very good fresh) and just one or two sherwood (which didn't seem to be as good as the lang). Both were about the same size, about the size of a small-medium fig or a decent wild persimmon. There were two or three good bites, plus gnawing the rest off the pit. Looking at fruitnut's picture, though, or even thinking about scott's cherry-size fruit, it's hard to imagine such jujubes being worthwhile. I've liked the jujubes I've had, but they haven't been super intense. To me they seem more like something I would enjoy in apple kind of quantities (as opposed to something like raspberries or even cherries.) What I'm really wondering is whether these smaller jujube varieties can be worth growing. Is there that much of a difference in taste between varieties, Scott, that the sacrifice in size (especially when there's a pit in the middle that makes eating it a lot more difficult than a blueberry) is worth it? Does anyone else have a case to make for the smaller jujube varieties?

strudeldog_gw do you rememeber what species of Jujube you had killed to teh ground , I planted 3 jujubes( 16" tall whips) in the spring of 2015 at which time all 3 jujubes ( Lang , Georgia 866, and Sherwood ) On march 31 2015 I had a 27F frost ( at that time they were all 3-4 ft tall) were vigorously sprouting leaves ( maybe ¾”long tufts) The Lang which was also the more vigorous of the 3 (before the frost) sprouted back soon after the frost losing only the outer branches . the Georgia 866 took til May 1st before it showed any signs of life above the graft line and as of today (May 9 2015) the Sherwood has no life above the ground only suckers . I am wondering is this means that the Lang is the most resilient after a late spring freeze , the Ga 866 second and the Sherwood 3rd ....or if teh Land was just an exceptional specimen ...I would like to plant more jujube and would like some suggestions which species will be most likely NOT to be killed to the graft line by a spring freeze after teh trees have broken dormancy ... anyway if you can tell me what species of jujube was killed on your property I can avoid that one

Yes, that is Jujube. Both the leaves and the fruit give it away. And if the yard is unmowed, you may notice suckers growing up around the tree with wicked little spikes on the branches (this comes from the grafted rootstock). Li and Lang are the "popular" (relatively speaking) varieties in the U.S. The fruit in the photos above look closer to Lang than to Li, but I am voting for some other variety. The Lang in my yard have more of a pear shape. Jujube are famously hardy and can survive drought, Texas heat, and temperatures well below freezing (I've read subzero). I doubt they would have any problem growing in Denver. But they aren't really very popular anywhere in the U.S. -- the flavor is indeed comparable to apple, but much less juicy, and the fruit does not store well unless dried (the preferred form in much of Asia). I use it in apple recipes (pie, bread, butter and so on) for which it is very well suited, though it takes longer to peel the smaller-than-apple sized fruit. The main advantage to jujube as a fruit tree is you don't have to spray for bugs or disease... serious. There are some other cultivars out there. I have Shanxi Li and Honeyjar growing in a pot; the latter is supposedly a much improved, sweeter fruit than Li or Lang. Do a web search on Roger Meyer for more info on jujubes.

I'm assuming your jujube is a Thai Giant, since that's the only variety I've seen for sale in my part of Florida. I don't know anything about other varieties. Those little buds you see will turn into tiny yellow flowers, which may, or may not, become fruit. My largest jujube has been flowering like crazy all summer, but isn't producing any fruit. Last January, this tree produced lots of fruit. What's happening now has me confused. I've never seen a fruit tree absolutely covered with blossoms fail to produce fruit! If your tree is anything like mine, you'll be surprised at how quickly it will grow. I hope yours has plenty of room!
