It appears to be a Parthenocissus perhaps P. quinqueifolia or P. inserta.

the problem with vines in the compost pile is the woody vine itself .. if it becomes so .... the suggested ID is the grape family ... and they are the worst ..

they take usually take forever to break down ... and make turning the pile near impossible.. unless you really like cussing while you do so ... which in itself can be therapeutic .. lol ...

when i took down some large grape plants.. i made dozens of xmas wreaths out of them.. just by winding them up ... i gave them away to everyone who walked in the yard.. lol .. now that recycling ... lol

Try using red or white clover in your garden I have observed that grass wasn't growing near a part of our yard where we grew melons and watermelon so this year as an experiment we our going to thow white organic cloverseeds in our vegetable garden It is supposed to also fix nitrogen in the soil just as beas when planted with corn as Squash shades and protects of what's known as The Three Sisters.Oh White clover is supposed to be a good grass suppressor prevents grass from growing just whats needed in our garden.First we did a layer of 3 layers of the white ink less news paper wet it all down with our iltered garden hose then put cardboard around the whole garden fence then wet that down too alk done o a non windy day topoed with cow manure and some chicken manure then we put 3 inches of woodchips or woodchip mulch last year in the Spring but all that should have been done in the Fall! This year we are not planting plants but Only Organic Heirloom seeds and some Organic plants howeveryou need to keep tge woodchips away from the stems and keep around the drip area only! Put Toilet paper rolks around seedlings to prevent cutworms thise white cabbage montths lay.Spray aroundfir ticks aunts red yes and fleas Use Garlic online stuff I'll get back you thx medicine

That's good stuff. I have put similar stuff directly on the ground as mulch around trees and shrubs and even flowers and there were no adverse effects. The only drawback is if some of it is still very dense. Those dense bits should definitely be chipped. I have also seen some mention on one or two sites about "Hugelkultur" or "German Mound" composting as a way to get rid of large amounts of woody material but I have not tested out that method.

Got Mold!!!! you are getting garden gold. It's already composting. If you can mix it & especially if you can mix fresh HM in it it will be great compost. Don't make making compost get overwhelming. As it is, it will become compost. You can speed up the process by mixing & fluffing to get air for the "bugs", bacteria, worms etc. so they can multiply quicker. Adding the HM will feed the microbes, worm etc. & make a richer compost. Fresh HM will help it heat up, specially if it has the urine (nitrogen source) mixed with it. Grass clipping will need mixed in but also help heat it up. Try to keep it DAMP, not wet. Mix it every 2 weeks or so, in 6 weeks it should be usable in a garden. More browns, like old leaves, straw, cardboard etc & you'd have the perfect mix but not necessary for it to break down. What you have already will be compost, faster if mixed add the HM if you can. Mother Nature will make it compost even if yo do nothing, fun to help her though. Mix & keep Damp, not wet is key.

"Leaves, bark, or wood chips of black walnut should not be used to mulch sensitive landscape or garden plants. Even after a period of composting, such refuse may release small amounts of juglone." From:Purdue Cooperative Extension I have black walnuts in my yard and I avoid adding any part of the tree to my compost. For me, it just isn't worth the risk. Maybe others have anecdotes to refute this, but I'd proceed with caution if I chose to use any BW in my compost. If anyone has other information, I'd like to see it.

Thank you for the help. I only intend to use the leaves, stripped away from the vine in my compost tumbler. In another post, someone thought it might be Virginia Creeper. Does that seem like a good possibility? (on side note, the Latin name is, for me, less helpful than the common name.

It is always possible to cut the vine into smaller pieces before putting on the compost pile.

BTW why you want to get rid of it? The leaves turn a beautiful amber and red in the fall and the berries are a food source for many species of birds. Also, depending where you live, it could be native to your area.

Yes, Virginia Creeper is one of common names for Parthenocissus quinquefolia.

I have an endless supply of leaves, so I'm sure it will continue to flourish. I have limited sources of nitrogen products for the compost tumbler and, as I said, there's quite a lot of it. The vines cover my back fence and come back every year. I agree, it's a beautiful plant.

All soft parts, not just leaves, are fine for composting. When it drops its leaves in autumn use them too.
