Hi all, I love bamboo and have been growing it for about 2 years now. I have the Buddha's Belly Variety and they are all doing well....except one. The leaves appear "scorched" and whitened on the upper and outer parts of the plants. The culms are fine...green. I live in Tucson and the plant thrives off the intense sun it gets which is about 6-7 hours a day. My other plants are located in corners while this one is next to an open fence. Any ideas as to what may be causing the white scorched look of the leaves? Thanks.

alan- Possibly...but the original poster seems to be suggesting that the damage occurs at a specific height and that this is true regardless of how tall the culm is. Squirrels are attracted to the tender, sugar-containing, new shoots when they are just a few inches high and get much less interested as the tips elongate and harden off. I'm just not convinced that a squirrel is chewing through the side of a 15' culm halfway up...it's not that tasty.

Pronounced nodes on Buddha Belly are said to be encouraged by stressing the plant (reduced watering). If that was my bamboo, I'd leave the new culm as it adds visual interest. Besides, cutting it off will not necessarily encourage new growth...bamboo growth habits are not like other plants.
