What is going on with my rose cutting?

Hi all, this is the same cutting I had posted before that I had propagated since May 25th. And it seems to be growing a bloom? Should I cut it off to help the cutting with it's roots?

*And if so, what is the best way to do it? Shall I cut it off as close to the cutting as possible, or say just (3mm) below the head of the bud?

(The orange stuff is just turmeric!)

Nip the bud ASAP. Its energy should be going to building up the young rose's size, not in flowering while so young.

If its roots are well evident, gradually acclimate the start to outside humidity. When the foliage is well adjusted to your local outside humidity it's time to pot it up. I recommend a pint sized pot at first.

Once potted up it's then time to graduate it into full sunlight. That takes weeks to accomplish, especially in July and August. When the roots have filled the pint pot very well, then into a gallon pot is my advice. When the gallon pot is well root filled, it's into the ground for the young bush.

Take everything slowly.

Thank you so much! Should I cut it off as close as I can to the main stem cutting? Or just snip off the bud?

They did good for a day until I left for Atlanta and the sprinkler system was OFF the entire week. When we got back Friday afternoon, I had lost over half of them due to lack of water. I think I'm going to stick some more in the sand next weekend. I also think once I pot them I may leave them under the mister for a week or 2. I had to come back to Atlanta today but think a few may survive. It is TOUGH to do anything like that when you have to be gone 4-5 days at the stretch. My office is in Atlanta, my "home" is near Vidalia.

What is cutting my rose leaves?

Travis, That's a tough dilemma to diagnose properly. A chewing insect, or its larva, seems plausible...some kind of caterpillar. Then slugs are famous for making erratically shaped damage. I have giant slugs that grow to 3.5" long and .75" diameter, but are unable to do much damage to the roses being to heavy to slither up thorny canes, but they decimate low growing perennials and annuals, even eating just emerging new spring growths on Opuntia cacti. I have seen, with my own four eyes (counting my glasses!), English sparrows, pigeons, and starlings tear leaves and segments of leaves off of many kinds of garden plants. They either eat them, just drop them as if for spite, or fly off to add the leaf to their nests. Sparrows in particular, decimate annual poppy foliage here. Pigeons devour my sedum and hen and chicks. Pigeons will also pick at and eat petunia leaves. Since the foliage in question on your rose is relatively close to the ground, I suspect giant slugs, or an avian pest at work. If so, I believe that as your rose increases on size, the damage will diminish and probably discontinue all together. Moses

Jena, my Perle d’Or did the bud drop thing it’s first year, the whole year. A lot of my roses also had chlorosis, including Perle d’Or, even though they were getting regular Magnesium-sulfate and I was alternating between Miracle Grown and a seaweed fertilizer, all in the hopes of curing them of chlorosis. Mostly it was the Polyanthas and Multifloras that had this problem. Finally I sent in a sample for a soil test. I had plenty of all the minerals and nutrients except for Nitrogen (which I already knew since its obviously devoid of any organics and so I was fertilizing) and absolutely zero Manganese (Mn) detected. Once I put a teaspoon of Manganese Sulfate dissolved in a gallon of water on each rose last fall the chlorosis completely disappeared and Perle d’Or stopped dropping buds. I will now do this once or twice a year; not too often since Mn is a minor nutrient and too much can be toxic. The Miracle grow I was using did have trace Mn, but somehow it wasn’t enough. I wonder if my soil was just binding it up? This just demonstrates that bud drop could be due to lack of an essential nutrient. It might not necessarily be Manganese for you. But since you mention the Kellogg soil might not be that great, I would give it a nice dilute liquid fertilizer once a week and see if it cures it.

Your roses definitely have insect damage and likely nutritional issues. The images definitely help, however, providing the area where you are gardening would assist gardeners in or close to your area evaluate what is happening. There are certain pests etc. that are more of a regular nuisance in some areas and places, versus being less to virtually non-existent in others.

I would just nip off the bud to the first leaf below it, leaving as much young foliage on the growing cutting as possible. At this stage in its development every leaf on the young bush is needed in order to hulk it up, even small, one or two leaflet leaves. Leaves are the bush's 'mouths.' The more mouths, the more 'eating,' occurs, which results in more growth.

Be careful not to over water the young rooted cutting. Over watering kills more young rose starts than for any other reason. At least that has been my experience.

Shaping the young bush for a good framework will come later, once it's gotten some age and size on it. Young bushes look gangly at first. As they mature, symmetry and balance develop naturally, plus with the help of your pruners. As basal growth kicks in, a young bush starts to take on its characteristic variety's mature shape, whether: upright, spreading, or arching in habit.

Everything takes time. Some varieties get to the 'gallon pot full of roots stage,' in 6-8 months, while others take up to 18 months to get that mature.

Thank you for the helpful information! I lifted the dome and worked as quick as I could. I now plan to use chopsticks to lift the dome a bit and work on acclimating it. I know this is just the beginning! Cheers
