I have seen several Eastern Red Cedar planted within 6' of a house and do ok. They tend to lead slightly away from the house and do not have large limbs or roots for 60+ yrs generally. Have also seen a couple of Arizona Cypress used successfully with similar results. Another possibility would be Italian Cypress. They are often planted within 3' of a structure seemingly without problems. The wild version has a cone shape in lieu of the pencil shape commonly seen. These 3 can take heat and drought and full sun. Personally it is against my religion to plant trees closer than 18' to a house. But from what I have seen used successfully, medium size conifers are what seem to work. California has some native cypress species that might also work well in this application. Would stay away from pines, redwoods, and other conifers that tend to get extremely tall/big.

I do have a privacy fence and also I have two trees very close to my neighbor line. I did not plant them they grew on their own. I think they are Maple or just huge green trees. They are so beautiful like drawn by an artist extending 80-90 feet tall and spreading their branches and roots in my neighbor's yard.I asked the neighbor permission to come to their yard with my ladder and chain saw. They did not mind. I trim as much as I can. It is embarrassing. I asked the Neighbor if it is a bother to them I can remove them and his wife said "No don't I love the trees you don't know how much oxygen they are producing and look how many bird nests in the trees I enjoy the singing of the birds". I planted 4 Apricot trees this year on the same side but left a good 6 feet between the trees and the fence. Even they are dwarf Apricot trees and don't grow that much I wanted to make sure they stay in my property. Some Neighbors are very cynical once I had a neighbor who used to get upset when my cat walks on his grass He moved. I am lucky now I have Good ones.

Crimson Queen and Red Dragon are mounding dissectums that will be much wider than tall. CQ will be the largest and I would give it at least 5-6ft. The Red Dragon you could 4ft. Those are miniums and may/will require some pruning to control in the future. Seiry is an upright grower shat is as wide as tall if not just a bit wider. It is very willowy in youth. It can grow easily to 15ft tall. It is one of the most beautiful maples in my opinion. I would want 7ft from the house, but again that would be the ideal minimum. Seiryu does not lend itself to pruning to contol size as well as some of the other maples. It is best left to grow naturally. Orido nishiki will be 8-10ft tall, but can be taller. It will not be quite as wide as tall so you could go 4-5ft from the house. Now, I rarely follow my own advice and plant closer to the house, you just have to be ready to control them and in doing so, you will not see the form maples can achieve. The other option on the Seiryu for example is to plant close to the house and prune the back side of the tree, thereby it grows away from the house. This can work and is done often--not ideal but if kept up it can be tasteful. MJH

Agree with Embothium. The damage tree roots can cause to the foundation is normally a red herring with modern houses. Fallen branches are a bigger problem, but American Persimmon is very strong wooded. Fruit could be messy if it is female. American Persimmon hates being moved...I'd leave well enough alone.
