Volunteer Seedlings?

Spring 2020 I planted a rudbeckia fulgida goldsturm. It's starting to return. What I'm wondering is, are these volunteer seedlings surrounding the original plant or are these additional shoots from runners under the soil from the original plant? Is there any way to tell? Are they growing too close together for any of them to thrive and should therefore be moved?

I'm in USDA Zone 7b, by the way.

The sprouts are coming from rhizomes, normal growth habit for Rudbeckia fulgida. You could uncover gently some soil from one of them to see.

straight down pix are bad enough.. but upside down is something else.. lol .. wonder whats going on with houzz today with all the upside down pix ...

anyway ...if you want to know whats going on.. then dig them up and look.. and then replant it ...spring is the perfect time of year for such ...

and if you want a new clump somewhere else.. break a piece off and move it ..

most of us.. didnt have the WWW to rely on.. and to make us worry .. we just dug things up.. and learned.. and maybe killed a few things ...

btw: zone alone means nothing but min winter temp for one minute in the dead of winter.. big city location tells us much more.. but in this case.. the pic tells us.. its just coming out of dormancy ... so its planting time .. digging it up and replanting it would be no different that buying a new plant.. bare rooting it. and planting it ...

ps: i would NOT dig things up in july and august .. not the right time of year ... i had to kill a few plants to learn that lesson ... lol ...

@macranthos, yes there are quite a few river birch in the neighborhood, some within a block. Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't know what kinds of trees those were before your comment. And it probably explains this other volunteer I have (picture below), which seems likely to be Betula nigra. Interestingly it has the same red stem as the smaller seedlings I originally asked about, which look a great deal like the photo you posted. And yes, I also have them all over the place in my back yard and deck container pots.

I have some volunteers too from a plant that didn't winter over. I tried moving a couple in late spring & they died after a few days so I left the rest, the roots weren't big because they were babies. Now they are fair sized plants that would look like a 4" pot size if I was buying them so still small enough to move. I'm leaning toward trying again in late winter/early spring right before they start growing. They start waking up early I've noticed in the past. Since I have more than one, I'm going to move one this fall to place I'd like to have it growing. They really don't like Oklahoma so I expect only a season or two. We treat them like short lived perennials down here.
