Let's talk about orchids
Comments (14)Kevin, since you asked, life is interesting down here. It's very cool to be able to pick oranges, poncans, lemons, and grapefruits off trees growing wild or in the yard. We were going to go to something called "Smash-A-Rama" Friday night but forgot. Not only do they smash cars but they have school bus races, RV races and races with cars/trucks pulling trailers. Yup, the North Carolina rednecks were downright sophisticated and I didn't even know it. Instead Friday night, we ended up at an alligator "zoo"/marina (although they call them fish camps?)/biker bar/diner combo that, frankly, defied description. I was so amused (if that's the right word), I was speechless. It was beyond tacky. I had to eat at the restaurant simply to say I had (I had gator bites). The restaurant was covered top to bottom in different colored lights with lights also wrapped around the palm trees out front, also in various colors. Time will tell what other strange things I find here. We did go to Canaveral on Thanksgiving and take pics. It was wicked cold on the beach though because it was really windy. I did see the space shuttle and launch pad, from about a 1/4 mile, which is as close as the general public can get (I've seen it before, of course, but only from a highway). Since we had the digital equivalent of a 1000mm lens for the camera, we got some good shots of it anyway. If anyone is interested the Nikon N80 is sweet. It took about 5 seconds to fall in love with it, although I'm having to adjust to the different ambient light here and using my lenses on a digital camera. Yup, the orchids came with me, at least the few I have left after last winters disaster with an unexpected frost. I just put in a big order with Andy for tons of laelia and a couple pleuros to replace those I lost and because they can stay outside all year. Laelia and pleuros had become my "thing" and that's about all I care to grow anyway. I had it going on with the cool to intermediate growing pleuros in NC, so I'm hoping I can pull that off in Florida too. Right now the temps are perfect for pleuros (average winter low is 50). My one masdie is tickled to death to be outside. I won't even try the cooler growing orchids here though, so I guess I've seen my last drac bloom on my own plant....See MoreSouthern Ontario Orchid Show
Comments (11)Thanks for looking :) Brooke - yes I was pretty amazed at myself. Then again, now that I think about it, I may have held off buying goodies in anticipation for the show in two weeks...it won't be as spectacular, but they have excellent (and incredibly cheap) divisions from their huge greenhouses (I got a division of coel. cristata for 6 dollars last year...as well as a flacida (5 dollars) and a gigantic fimbriata (8 dollars), which I'm looking forward to. Carol - wish you could have made it too! Any chance you'll make the burlington show? This was the photo that won the 2nd place ribbon :)...See MoreWanted to share some pics with nice people here of Orchid Show
Comments (15)I don't usually drop in over here, but for you, Mike... and the few other regulars here who have been so nice to me in the past, I made an exception. Josh, good to see you, too, of course. :-) I love all the photos... and Josh, that is a lovely flower! I'm glad I got a chance to see it! It's been so long since I've stopped in... that the Den keiki I was gifted with a few years ago finally began its first set of buds. Unfortunately, they shriveled and died before getting a chance to open, but at least I now know the plant is of age and size to bloom. I believe it's simply too dry in the environment I have to offer it, and my husband works with electronics, so a humidifier is not on the menu. It's ok... I'm just happy it's alive and flourishing, and next year I'm sure to get more buds... and I'll be ready with a helping hand of some type... I've got some time to figure it out, and Mike has actually given me some good suggestions. Take care, people... and happy growing!...See MoreKmart let the orchids die
Comments (24)Sadly to tell youTerpguy, we have only 1 garden center here in Lethbridge and the whole center has a max of about 8-10 phals. and the cost is extremely expensive. The lowest price for a 4" pot phal is $29.99 the medium cost is $39.99 and the nice looking phal in bloom is $49.99. I never saw them on sale either. So, I am very looking forward to orchid show next spring in Calgary. My orchid lady friend said she used to go there and buy the left over at a dirt cheap price. Most of them were not knowing of what kind because out of bloom but she didn't care. She got them and nurtured them and most of them turned out pretty great for her. She's an elderly now. She said her passion has faded and she's getting ready to go to a condo. She'd like to give me some of her orchids for very small price but I don't have a conservatory house like her. Most likely they will not survive in my living room. Anyways, I just gone to Safeway and got a Christmas gift for myself. An iron umbrella planter! It has 5 pots around so I can put 5 phals in them and they don't take a lot of space in my living room. I am holding up untill spring to fill them. After Safeway I then went to Wal-Mart for last minute shopping. Of course the place I go was orchids... they are all dying and there was a worker near by, I asked him if he ever put those on sale. He said "no! if they died, we'll get all money back from green house". So, that's it! They don't care for the plants. Thank you Terp for your advice and have a wonderful, Merry Christmas!
