The Lynchburg Va City Cemetery Rose Garden : time to help them

If you haven't visited them, they have a very nice collection of old, found and rediscovered roses and support of the city in keeping them there. But as we've read about Sacramento, sometimes 'city fathers' don't realize what they have.

There's a competition in Virginia (the state) about which endangered statues should be helped. ANYONE CAN VOTE and you can even VOTE OFTEN.

I think this might be a way all of us can support the whole cemetery and remind folks we'll never meet that it's important in many ways.

Here's a link that explains what and where and a quick search of the web will show you roses that are dormant right now.

Wow...I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but that link took me to yahoo mail :P

Edit: After I signed out of yahoo mail, the next time I tried it took me to the ATT sign in page. Verrrrrry weird. Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be happening?

Ann, thanks so much for posting. I would really like to support them in any way I can. (I got interested in the City Cemetery through an initial interest in the Anne Spencer House and Garden.) However, like Fig, when I clicked the link, I was taken to an AT&T login page.

We looked at that rose yesterday and think the tree is probably "only" 50-60 feet high,and the rose is going up 40 feet or a bit more. There's still room at the top for the rose to climb, and we believe that it will reach the top, and cascade down once it has no more place to grow. Ann, I think you are right about the microclimate. The cemetery was originally a sand hill, created from the Sacramento river. Its high ground, in a city second only to New Orleans in risk of flooding, is why the cemetery was established there in 1850. Up at the top of the hill, where the banksiae is planted, is the sandiest soil of all. The curator has always suspected that the water table is pretty high. When we have removed roses, we are sometimes astonished at how big and deep the roses grow. I told some of the sheriff's crew to remove an Alberic Barbier, and went to lunch. When I checked on them, they were standing chest-high in the hole, still digging! It is a cemetery, for heaven's sake - we don't want to dig TOO deep! - so I had them stop, even though there were still substantial roots to be seen. Many of our roses grow bigger in the cemetery than elsewhere. We don't prune hard, we rarely feed, and we do usually provide regular, weekly water. But it must be something about the microclimate/microsoil. A funny thing about that banksiae - it's only been there a dozen years, and I'm told that a volunteer cut it off a few years after it was planted. I got there at 9:30 and was so distracted by the roses I ran out of time and didn't go on an active hunt for people ... but I did I meet Jannorcal, Jeri, Clay, the dals, Laura and Fred Boutin. I saw Darrell Schramm working the rose sale table. I recognized Anita by her nametag and pictures I'd seen of her ... but she was so truly busy that I didn't have the heart to interrupt her. Later I joined her rose tour but my time was up and I had to leave. I was there about 3 hours and enjoyed every minute. I didn't buy a rose but did get an apron - maybe I won't lose my gloves from now on. The event seemed so well organized; kudos to all of you that make the event possible and work so hard on the roses in that cemetery. On the drive down to Los Angeles I realized I never did meet Pam or Paula although I'd been looking for both of you. But as I said, I was really distracted by the roses in the cemetery. I know a lot of pix will be shared; the cemetery roses are really almost overwhelming - but here is a shot of the prettiest 'Sally Holmes' I've come across. So many more there as well ... "Maybe we can all wear a rose in our lapel or something so we can recognize each other." We'll do better than that. When the date is posted, we'll make plans to actually meet up -- instead of trying to rely on finding the other GWers. I left with hips from Old Blush in one pocket and Blossomtime in the other. The seeds from both are safely tucked into the crisper in the 'fridge. This is the first year I will have tried to grow rose seedlings -- we'll see what happens. It was the low winter sun that made the chestnut rose hip so dramatic. and the shallow depth of field blurred the background away to accentuate the subject. I forgot to show you the structures they use at the cemetery to keep some of the larger roses upright. Rebar semi-circles with legs attached keep the roses tight against the wall (or fence). Late to the party to reply to questions ... sorry about that. Anyway ... The Old City Cemetery is owned by the City of Lynchburg. They have a wonderful cooperative relationship with the Southern Memorial Association, which has made the cemetery into the destination for tourists and for local folks that it has become. Support buildings were moved to the cemetery, or built from scratch, including a depot, the Pest House, a visitor's center, a beautiful chapel, and the new Comfort House. Rose garden, including a separate area for the Carl Cato collection, is but one of the things that I love about Lynchburg's wonderful cemetery. (Jane Baber White wrote a fantastic book about her work restoring the cemetery's roses, planning and planting the new gardens, and developing the rest of the grounds. It's fascinating!) As far as roses for sale ... The largest variety this spring for browsing and buying in person may be at Lynchburg. The sale at Tufton is much smaller, and it includes only a few of the rarest varieties from their garden. At the HRF conference in May, we will have roses available for sale at Saturday's banquet. (I don't have the list of those yet. I can let you know what we have as soon as I know.) Connie

OCC is incredibly excited about being named one of ten honorees in the Virginia Association of Museums' (VAM) annual Top-Ten Endangered Artifacts Competition!

The beloved "Angel Statue" and grave of two-year-old Emmett Jefferson is in desperate need of conservation through cleaning and stabilizing. The once white marble is now covered in mildew, and the entire monument is leaning and threatening to topple onto the adjacent ledger stone. $1000, the top-prize in VAM's competition, could go a long way in helping protect this special landmark at OCC. roseseek: Thank you for the link to the Roses page. I had read about the cemetery/park before, but didn't know that the Director had started with roses by planting one by each headstone that included a rose carving. I have a dear friend from high school who lives in Lynchburg and hope to get up there this May to see my friend, the Old City Cemetery, and the Anne Spencer House and Garden.
