Restore or Refinish Antique Piano?
Comments (6)Thanks, everyone! This piano has a wonderful tone. There is a university level music school in town which the piano man has worked with and he feels that this piano is worth restoring. He checked the sound board when he unloaded the piano and it is in perfect shape. Even though the piano has not been tuned for a very long time and has been moved twice since, it is not far off tune. The felts are compressed and could stand to be replaced, but they may be the originals - the piano man thought that this piano has never been played much and has been treated pretty good, outside excepted. Since there are several professional musicians in training in the family, I doubt this piano will ever be sold. And it is a far better piano than 99% of the junk manufactured today, so I think it is worth keeping. I'll look up the piano forum for mare advice. Thanks! Anne...See MoreAntique piano sound plate
Comments (2)How big is it, what's it made of, & how much does it weight?? Back in late 60's Dad bought a Lester player piano from a co-worker... maybe $25, iirc? Can't remember HOW it was ever put in our basement? It didn't have any of the player "guts", was NOT anywhere near playing condition... we just played around with it. I'm sure it's old enough to have actual EBONY & IVORY keys, tho badly beat up. When we cleared out Dad's house, I (can't believe) paid abut 10 TIMES that amount to have it hauled about 40-50 miles to my house. It has been living exactly where the mover guys put it... over 20 years ago!?! Imagine the dust "wolverines" behind/under THAT hulk!! Have inexpensive speakers sitting inside the box that sound GREAT coming out. I've thought about trying to disassemble it, piece by piece to get to what LOOKS like a brass?? plate that runs the whole width of piano... where all those wires attach. I don't know is it goes all the way to the floor (probably a good 4')....See MoreHow to clean an antique rug?

Comments (19)I hope you don't perceive me as challenging your knowledge, because I am not an expert. I am just curious and also concern that this is an extremely valuable item for FOAS. Any damage done could be irreversible. 1. If you want to drive a scent deeper into the fibers, what would you do? You would heat up the scent in an enclosed container. That's how you smoke meat. 2. As I understand it, shellac was the single most used wood finish around 1800s. Perhaps you have better information than I do. dcarch...See Morelindac92
