Floor construction of concret koi pond
Comments (1)Hello Kesini. Many ponds are easier to keep with a rubber roofing liner, specifically 45 mil epdm. This protects against leaks, and a cement pond can have difficulty staying at the correct pH for fish. Also, cement might be rough and fish could scratch themselves against it. I see many ponds with sand on the bottom so the liner lies on sand, and if you walk on it you do not tear the liner. It sounds like you have good experience with cement building -- you could build the sides using the rebar as you suggest, then pour sand in the bottom, lay the liner, then pour a nice cement border/surround on top to hide the liner edges, even make it look like natural stone....See MoreRevamping pond and need advice please
Comments (6)Welcome to the joys of building a pond. I have the Savio compact skimmer (because of it's size). I used a 2" bulkhead fitting in the bottom of the skimmer in that space between the filters and the back of the skimmer. I use a small threaded filter in this bulkhead fitting in the skimmer--just in case small fish came through the skimmer I don't want them in the pump. From the bulkhead I have a short piece about 3" of ABS, then a 90 to bring the pipe up again before going into the pump house. My skimmer and pipework is only about 18" away from the pump. 2" ball valve then a wye as joins the line from my sc. My valves are Ipex valves (given to me by a friend) so have quick disconnects for the pump. I glued the fitting that comes with the skimmer for a submersible pump into the skimmer. The one problem I have with my new pump is that I can no longer run skimmer only when shutting down the sc for water changes. The skimmer draws down too much and the pump wasn't getting enough water. So that might have to be something you calculate for in sizing your pump. In my case I would have to be drawing water from another source-perhaps a midline point but don't have space for any more prefilters before the pump. I also don't have my bd plumbed into the skimmer--someone else will have to advise you on this and draw down issues. If you do a search on this site there are instructions for installing the Tetra bd. If you rock the bottom of your pond there really isn't much point in the bd as it just won't work. The knife valve is to shut off the flow to the pump and or sc for maintenance. Ball valves are usually used to control the flow of the water. Leaf trap/priming pot even if external pump is in ground is a good idea. I didn't have one and found out the hard way when filter floss got wrapped around the pump. If I had a leaf basket it would have got caught in there. Also the Savio waterfall filters are expensive. A skippy type filter would give you more filtration at about 1/3rd the cost....See MorePond Addiction (Dream Pond)
Comments (37)Cost....there were many extra bells and whistles that I wanted specifically added. I told myself that I wanted everything ready now. The original project was for a 20k pond with floating rocks, upper pond, 2 bottom drains, pump, uv filter , and the large filter. The price of the project was escalated by the fact that most pond companies run when you mention a bottom drain. Most pond installation companies only know how to install an aquascape system. I already have a 2000 gallon pond with that system. I wanted a koi pond, not a garden pond. Please understand I love my garden pond. So to find a company to do what I wanted, i had to pay hotel fees since they were out of town. I didn't like it either, but the closest company that did what I wanted was 2 hours away in Allentown Pennsylvania. I heard about them through my koi club. So to give you an estimated cost, I said in a past thread I could of bought a brand new truck with the money spent on this. The end project, I increase the pond to 45 k gallons. Why? Because I'm single with no kids and I can. I added another filter, another drain to the top pond, unforeseen drainage plumbing under the pond, electric and water ran directly to the pond for another 10k including labor. I giggle when I think about having this pond in my back yard. I became the most popular person in my neighborhood over night. I wonder how much they would of noticed if I bought a brand new truck....See Morefish size vs. pond size (and more)
Comments (4)I had the same situation where somebody actually gave me a small koi to put into my pond because they were leaving the area. I was shocked to see the fish was only about 6" at 2yrs of age (I've seen Koi growing to 18-20" in 2 years.) Since that time, the little koi has done remarkably well and has grown 12 inches in my pond. You might be right about stunting their growth for all the reasons you've already mentioned, but if you get them in the proper environment I agree with Tedd... your koi should grow....See MoreKDH Associates
