pansyloverandgrower Hi, the contest you are speaking of is the "16th annual Whidbey Island Giant Pumpkin Contest". The seeds were donated by the Pacific northwest Giant pumpkin growers (PNWGPG). They also have seeds for sale at the Puyallup spring fair. The seeds that were given away for the Coupeville Harvest Fest at the Farmers Market.The seeds are 'Atlantic Giant'(AG) pumpkin seeds. When planting pumpkin seeds, the seeds can be arranged in either hills or rows depending on the available garden space and the number of seeds being planted.For hill planting: Create a mound of soil three feet in diameter with a shallow trench around it for collecting water. Plant four to five seeds on each hill, spaced six to eight inches apart. If planting multiple hills, each hill should be at least ten feet apart to give plants sufficient space. For row planting: Create an elevated row of dirt with small trenches on either side to collect water. Plant two or three seeds every 18 inches along the row. If planting multiple rows, each row should be at least six inches away from its neighbors. Well, I'm not sure about the sugar water thing but I do want to point out a couple things.. 1) The 3 per hill is partially because there is not a 100% germination rate (only 1 or 2 may germinate). You can always thin the extras if they seem to get too big. The other reason is generally that many pumpkin varieties grow one long primary vine so you could have 3 vines trailing off in different directions. 2) If you're trying to grow the biggest one you can, once they start flowering pinch off all of the pollinated female flowers except for 3 once they start developing. This will focus the plant's energy. You can reduce down the "runt" later to focus it further. 3) It's generally too cold to plant pumpkins outdoors right now in our area (I'm in Everett). You can start the seeds indoors but I wouldn't plant outside for a few more weeks. Our highs are still struggling to make the 50s during the day and pumpkins don't do particularly well until temps are at least in the 60s. Pumpkins are generally very easy to grow once it's warm enough.

We in Zone 5 will soon reach our frost free date - May 6. It is usually recommended that squash (summer, winter, ornamental) be sown outdoors after all risk of frost is past and the earth has warmed up. You may be able to get away with planting them now this year, as it has been quite warm, but I usually wait until the end of May to plant them. If they don't sprout you can always plant more - I think they mature in 45 - 50 days.
