Dormant Hydrangea

Last fall I ordered dormant Snow Hill Hydrangea plants. I got 5 sticks with roots about 2.5 feet tall. I planted in the fall, and now they are starting to grow, but not all over the branch. Most are just getting leaves on the very top. The leaves that are growing look healthy, so I think the amount of sun/shade they are getting is fine. I have been using Miracle grow plant food for hydrangea that attaches to hose every 2 weeks (as the package recommends). Is there a way to encourage new growth lower on the branch...or am I going to have a hydrangea shrub 2 feet off the ground :) !

Thank you!
