Comments (22)You have been to Bonsai West? Yes I make the trip three or four times a year it is also a very pleasant fall foliage visit. I think you may of under rated the staff a little. If West doesn't have a color of pumice then usually NE does or one of these two places is storing (hiding) a low on hand color. Each color is sold separately at either shop in smaller bags. Will you be at teh C&S club meeting in two weeks in Bolton mass? LOL TEH it's nice to not have to be so formal and do a spell check isn't it ? Or did you wake a bit to early too ? If still needed I have some left over pine fines that should fit in the trunk easily enough. If you want or need them I can get some composted granite chips from a mountain sized pile at a very close cement company for nothing out of pocket. I'll check at John Deer (Ours is a country mile or two drive away ) to see if they have any Turface left. To answer your other question, ("Will I be at the Bolton CC&S event?") Also to expose you as the sleepwalker that you are. Sadly...... no.... I wont be there, ** ** ** ** ** * * * * ** ** ** but I will be in Boylston which is where Tower Hill is and in attendance of the CC&S event in question....See MoreBoston Garden
Comments (4)Welcome Julie. Quick question - why do you need to cover up the foundation? The idea of "foundation plantings" is a bit limiting, compared to the many different things you can do with the space in front of your house. That said, Mayalena's point about including different types of plants is a good one - solid evergreen masses won't give much value beyond blocking the view of the foundation. Not that they need to be avoided, just that you'll get much more interest if they are mixed with a few other kinds of plants. And ... there are some hollies that stay small with minimal pruning - I know that because I tried to use a particular holly in a privacy screen and was distressed when it stopped growing at about 4 feet in height. Last point - in a small front yard, it's very tempting to try to keep the shrubs snuggled up VERY close to the house - we naturally think this will leave more lawn and make the yard look bigger. This siting is really tough on the plants, as the soil next to the foundation will be too dry and the plants will not grow well, and gives a stingy, cramped look to the whole yard. Even for a traditional foundation planting, you should leave at least 3 feet between the house wall and the expected perimeter of the plant when it is full grown. This will allow for regular maintenance on the house, will look better, design wise, and will be more likely to result in well-grown, healthy-looking plants....See MoreCan you help us plan a trip to Cape Cod/Boston?
Comments (13)Goldgirl, I live about 20 minutes south of Boston and we visit Provincetown every summer. If there is anything I can help you with, please let me know. Most, if not all the nicer B & Bs and hotels in Provincetown have 3-5 night minimums and can be pricey. If you are planning your visit during carnival week (aug. 16th-22nd), things book up very, very quickly. We like the Crowne Point Inn - the standard rooms are very small, we usually book the upgraded rooms. The Carriage House and Carpe Diem are wonderful and a bit less pricey. All have great locations. Front Street (expensive) and Bayside Betsys (moderate) are our favorite places to eat. There are many fabulous restaurants and shops run the gamut from artsy boutiques and galleries to tee shirt shops. In Chatham, the Chatham Bars use to be the place to stay - friends have given it mixed reviews lately. If you want to treat yourself, the Wequassett Inn Resort is top notch. Great shops and restaurants there as well. In Boston, try to get to the North End (little Italy). On summer weekends there's a really fun farmers market. Transit is fairly easy once in town. I can't recommend a particular hotel, but I'd be happy to do some legwork for you - let me know what you're hoping to see and some idea of your budget!...See Morehotel/spa recommendations between Syracuse and Boston?
Comments (19)Ded -- DS is in Day (Days?) Hall right near Flint! Good thing he's an active guy in good shape. If he passes his audition he will also be playing his euphonium (a big horn) in the band, so that walk with his music case is going to be super fun. Just thought I'd check back and report that I did decide on Mirbeau. I will be there Fri-Tues (not this week...but I wish) and will see DS probably on Sat. for lunch or whatever he wants to do. I have almost a full day of spa treatments on Mon. (Massage, facial, lunch, mani, pedi) and otherwise plan to go for walks, read, and explore the town of Skaneateles. Any recommendations for that area, let me know... I think I may be celebrating this birthday more than anyone has ever celebrated a 50th birthday. Already went to Bermuda with close friends, being taken away to Woodstock VT in a few weeks with other friends, have a party being planned by DH (with assistance from 3 girlfriends), and then wrapping it all up in a solo spa trip. How lucky am I? We have had a super stressful year, so it's really fun to have good things to look forward to....See MoreOutsidePlaying
