Secret vs. Tiffany vs. Francis Meilland?
Comments (11)I think Francis Meilland is your best bet. I rate roses by beauty and bs resistance, and FM rates high in those categories--and is more pastel , which you desire. Tiffany is a lovely rose and bs resistant, but a medium and rather bright pink. Not what I would call "pale pink" at all. I don't know Secret, but helpmefind.com shows pics ranging from a lovely pastel pink edged whitish rose to a medium shade. Might sometimes be a darker color than you want--perhaps depending on amount of sun and temperatures? Don't know for sure, but I saw an on-going discussion there about Secret not liking heat but not performing that well if it is planted in partial shade, so I would have questions about that one--though a lot of rave reviews from this forum might banish my doubts. Whichever one you pick, all three are truly lovely and seemingly disease-resistant roses, so you probably can't go very wrong with any of them. Kate...See MoreRMV on Lady of Shalott?
Comments (16)Sorry, Sara-Ann! I have a few grafted Austins (most I own are own root) and a few have RMV. I lost more than half of the canes on one of my Claire Austin shrubs this winter that has RMV. It looks ugly, lopsided, and is not bouncing back. I bought it from a local nursery and so it could not be replaced by DA and the nursery has no guarantee on their roses. I ripped out 5 A Shropshire Lad last year that all had RMV and failed to grow much at all. DA offered to replace them but couldn't guarantee I could get own root ones (what I had originally ordered) and I just dropped it. My Gertrude Gekyll with RMV is just as vigorous as the other two I have and so no plans on taking it out at this time - interesting the difference. How long have you had LOS? Did you get it directly from DA? I wouldn't hesitate to call them and get it replaced. I was told they rogue infected roses in their field during the season but, as you know, it only may show itself intermittently and so I'm sure many go undetected. At least they have a guarantee. LOS is beautiful and I hope you can continue to have her in your garden....See MoreBathsheba vs Lady Shalott
Comments (3)Nice, Lilyfinch! Bathsheba in her first year for me has had a lot of growth from the base to form a bushy structure but does have long wiry stems. The blooms are softer in color than LOS, fade a bit, but fragrance much stronger. LOS has been a bit more narrow/upright. I wouldn’t be without LOS in the garden and based on Bathsheba’s performance this year - I wouldn’t be without her either. Bathsheba...See MoreLady Emma Hamilton or Carding Mill?
Comments (35)Ratdogheads, your pictures look great! My summers for the last few years have been pretty perfect with temps in the low 90's here and there, otherwise 80's, maybe a week of bad humidity and unbearable weather. I actually could plant roses all last summer it was so mild, and that is rare. We have been having strange weather for Wisconsin though, milder winters (like this last one) though last year's polar vortex was down to -26 without the windchill. My roses survived it. I'm curious on this year after the mild winter what will stay. I don't uncover till tax day, as we still usually get a frost around the 13th, then it's smooth sailing! I am having a hard time deciding what to prune as the canes are sometimes discolored then green then discolored further down. If it buds, do you keep it or cut it off? If it's totally brown or black I, of course, cut it off. Btw, thank you for showing your zone, I like to be able to see if someone is close to my zone and what they're growing! :) Krista, Wow! I love it between the two purple/pinks. It really brings out the pink. It doesn't look red at all. So pretty! I'm so glad you mentioned the fragrance because that is a must! Thank you!...See Moredianela7analabama
