Comments (12)Trev, those look like parsnips to me, but the leaves suggest parsley. In any event, the 'pars' segment is correct! :-) Cass, about 20 years or so ago (which was my first exposure to growing carrots), my grandfather and I had a beautiful patch going. At least 4 rows worth. My grandmother, who was dangerous in the garden to say the least, thought she'd be doing us a favor by going to snip parsley so my grandfather could make his fish gravy (we're Portuguese). So she goes out to the garden armed w. scissors. She comes back w. something that sure wasnt parsley. I looked at him, he looked at me. We had that "oh cr@p...." expression on both our faces. Yup.... carrots stripped right down to the ground.... Ugh.... God rest both of their souls now, but we didnt let her live that one down for a long time. We thought that little move couldnt be topped. Little did we know what she'd manage two years later. In fact, I'm gonna go start a new thread :-D...See MoreParsley root
Comments (5)My flat leaf parsley stayed out all winter, unprotected in a pot, with temps that went down in the low 20's. Low and behold, on a 5" stem, leaves sprouted as soon as the weather warmed up. I was shocked. I know it is a biennial. I have never heard of using parsley root. What do you use it for? Chopped/grated? I should have quite a root when it lives it's lifecycle after this season. Can you eat the stalk it is growing on as well?...See MoreGrowing Parsley Root from a Cutting?
Comments (2)If it works, I would also expect it to bolt (ie go to seed) faster. Probably best to grow from seed. Parsley root seed is easy enough to find from the large seed vendors. I've grown "Hamburg" with good success. FataMorgana Here is a link that might be useful: Baker Creek - Parsley Root...See MoreLast year parsley root - can I plant it?
Comments (3)There's not much point in planting a parsley root, whether regular parsley or Hamburg parsley. It is biennial which means that in its second year it is genetically programmed to bolt and run to seed. So the only reason to plant it would be to get seed. Or just as an experiment to see what happens. It probably won't grow at all unless you have some of the top of the root where the leaves shoot from....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
