fish-pond aeroponics with a hanging PVC pipe 'living wall'
Comments (6)thanks, that's a neat system, but nothing at all like what I have in mind. The growing pipes will hang vertically above a fish pond, and a pump will take water from a fish-pond (with fish in it), up to the top, and a sprayer will spray that water down through the hanging pipes which contain plants. It's a modification of the aeroponics setup where the pipes lay horizontally. :) d...See Moredouble towel bar vs. hooks
Comments (9)I really like the hooks we used in our daughter's bath. There are only 3 of them but they're double hooks so she can also use them for her robes and to hang wet bathing suits to dry. This room also serves as the guest bath and they worked out really well when we had company visiting from out of town, because everyone had their own hook. We haven't experienced any issues with the towels drying out between each use, but we're in sunny, dry California and I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Be sure to try out different hooks. I originally ordered the Mercer hooks from Pottery Barn, but the heavy towels wouldn't stay put. These are the vintage hooks from Restoration Hardware and we haven't had a problem. They're very heavy and "curvier" than some other hooks....See MoreHooks vs. bars: Help Single Dad w/ my towels!!
Comments (18)We have hooks and heavy 33x66 bath sheets and have not had any problems with them drying - I have found that they don't dry as well on bars because the towels have to be doubled over to fit on the bars if you don't have room for 36" bars. Double bars were even worse IME because there ended up being eight layers of thick fabric in a small area. Two towels on one double hook (Delta Victorian, not one I'd recommend) dry just fine. I live in coastal New Hampshire where it is downright malarial in the warm months and arid in the cold; towels are laundered once a week and we have no problems with funkiness. We do also have the issue of towels not being hung neatly on bars, and I think decorative towels are silly (I am pretty much a failure as a girly-girl!). :-) Here's a picture: One way to evaluate whether towels dry sufficiently on hooks where you live would be to get some of the cheap over-the-door hooks from somewhere like Walmart and give it a shot before installing anything permanent....See Morefish and chips - US vs. Commonwealth Countries?
Comments (27)pillog- "You have a point about the fryer oil, but my guess is it's more about money. Oil in that quantity is expensive," actually that was my point! It's expensive to fry well and since apparently most people don't know any better, restaurants cut corners there first. seagrass, tired oil sounds nicer than rancid oil, but that's really what is going on. Just as I wish public school had a few hours of instruction in 'civil horticulture' (don't plant invasives, don't plant blue spruce in the eastern US LOL) I wish they also taught 'realities in commercial and industrial food production' or something. Frying does 'wear out' an oil. Oils in food go bad, other than microbiological degradation. They oxidize...air literally burns them into toxic compounds. Big league food producers have ingenious ways to mitigate these problems. High end frying apparatus have special 'molecular filters' to catch the burnt oil particles. Likewise most potato chips are packed in nitrogen gas to keep the oil fresh. That is what cracks me up about those so-called "gourmet" kettle chips, that are often way more expensive than Lays etc. Other than differences in texture, the main thing that's different is that they are over-cooked and slightly rancid tasting! But as with badly fried food, I suspect some people's taste buds now associate a little bit of organic peroxides and other side chain reaction byproducts with what fried food should taste like. Or what chips should taste like. But to me the best fried food has none of those flavors. Good Japanese tempura is actually very bland unless you dip it in something...which might or might not be what you're "supposed" to do, culturally. (I despise the taste of soy sauce, so you won't find me dipping it in that! I just like eating it plain...and sorry, not with chopsticks either. I am a willful philistine when it comes to some Asian cuisines LOL. I love Indian and Thai, but do not like sushi or pho at all!) Likewise, good high quality chips (UK sense - fat french fries) or french fries are a slice of a potato with its texture and mouthfeel radically altered, but not its fundamental taste....See MoreJAN MOYER
