I admit, I own a gazing ball
Comments (27)I was given a blue glass gazing ball that is supported by three frogs embracing. The guys who gave it to me used another term to discribe the frogs. It took me over a year before I finally displayed it in my back yard garden. lol Now the glass covered bowling balls are another matter. I have quite a few tucked here and there. I also covered croquet balls with glass beads and put them with the bowling balls. I have left mine out all year and some are cracked so it's best to take them in for the winter. Go to your local bowling alley and ask if they have any balls they no longer use. They are usually free. Connie...See MoreA gazing ball for the garden...
Comments (24)Well, the one my wife made was quite easy. She used a bowling ball from a local Salvation Army store. First, she plugged the finger holes with auto body filler (aka "Bondo"). She filled in any small scratches and nicks as well, and lightly sanded the entire surface so the glue would stick better. Next, she found some plastic and rubber lizards at a dollar store. She found some at a craft store and at Party World too. If you don't want to use lizards, you can get snakes, frogs, insects, spiders, scorpions, dinosaurs, butterflies, ladybugs, or whatever appeals to you. She glued them on with Testors model cement, but pretty much any glue should work including silicone, Liquid Nails, polyurethane, etc. She set the bowling ball in a bowl so that it wouldn't roll around and glued the lizards on one at a time. After applying the glue to the bottom of a lizard and placing it on the ball, she put a piece of soft foam over it and a little weight to press the lizard down while the glue was drying. Then she would do another one, until the whole surface (except the bottom) was covered with lizards. Finally, she cleaned off any excess glue and sprayed the whole surface with glittery spray paint. And she will add the final touch by highlighting the lizards in another color of paint....See Moregazing ball
Comments (1)Hi Patricia, I don't think this side is very busy, so your question probably has not been seen. There are lots of bowling balls on the Garden Junk forum. I'll post a link for you. You can just type bowling balls in the search window and it should bring up lots of pics for you to see for inspiration. There are painted ones, mosaic ones and the ones with half marbles. I've made a couple. Just used half marbles on one and some small rocks on another one. GE Silicone II for windows and doors is the preferred glue. You can find it at Walmart or Lowes. It holds up well to weather changes such as heat and cold. Good luck with your project and your new home. You might enjoying looking around on the GJ forum if you are interested in making things for your yard. Comments (5)Thanks everyone..They must be sold at Michaels or Joanns, they are in a knit kit, wrapped with yarn. They are kind of rigid but do have some give if you push hard. I think the reinforcing with something might be good, can't imagine injecting with concrete tho Pat, although even some would help weight it on one end, huh? Yah Lynda, FL heat is a killer, I will make sure NOT to put in full sun..I need to be more daring and just TRY it..I got a couple including a few cute smaller ones, like the small floating mirror ones in our koi pond. Will keep you posted! Thanks so much! I know..Just DO IT!! lol AND finish grouting a bunch of other pieces AND the side slab, sheesh!;>)..pix to follow.. Debbie...See Morebeesneeds
