Transition from 2nd story front entrance to 1st story driveway/street
Comments (15)"... planning to bring the drive up as high as possible now, though ... we don't want it so high that it starts to block that lower-level window on the left." Your problem with getting good feedback is going to be that you're starting this process without properly introducing people to the surrounding site. We have only a snippet of information ... more or less a theoretical house front. Not a complete front yard or a driveway or even a good picture that shows the land/house relationship. As it is, every solution offered is already limited by your own preconceived notions, which limit what you show us. We've been here before and didn't come to a conclusion that you got excited. The set-up now is little different. Whatever you do architecturally, outside of changing the main entrance to the basement floor, will make no difference insofar as solving the problem, which has not yet been clearly identified (the path from parking-to-front-door problem.) No one can investigate how changing the approach to the house might work toward solving your problem. Most other threads on the forum seem to reach a more or less successful conclusion because they involve a little planting or a simple problem. Here, the problem is much more complex, but the base information is threadbare. Like a newspaper that starts with the front page headlines, and then goes to article titles, and then on to elaboration of details, is how you should be presenting information. We should see the whole front yard at a distance, some sequential pictures that show the present approach, some wide span scenes (from slightly overlapping pictures) that show the area from at least 2, or maybe three different points of view, since there is topography involved. (Each point of view should be a complete scene ... not a disconnected picture.) A landscape architect could not assess and explore the issue with so little information to go on. I'm not trying to be a downer about your thread or issue, but trying to say if you want to be happy when you leave, you've got to produce enough information to work with....See Moreunbalanced entry
Comments (8)If you're planning to go ahead changing your porch/portico, consider creating a wider porch floor with a totally new roof supported by posts that have a more "balanced" visual. You have numerous options depending upon how much you might want to enlarge your front porch, including but not limited to: * You could create a porch the full width of your home with a shed roof beginning just below the upstairs windows and only add a small gable within the shed roof over the front entry door. My personal preference would be hip corners for each side of the porch roof. https://www.flickr.com/photos/frontporchideas/12329191664 * A forward facing gable porch roof could share a center ridge line height with the main house roof ridge line but would be at a right angle to it. You could have the gable roof cover the upstairs window and leave the front of the gable open so the window view is below the porch roof. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/145381894191248234/ * You could use creating a new forward facing gable for the porch to "bump out" -- enlarge -- the room above it so the space above the porch within the gable is included in that room. https://www.thisoldhouse.com/narragansett-ri-idea-house/21019432/in-fine-detail-2018-idea-house-finale * More ideas: https://www.front-porch-ideas-and-more.com/porch-roof-designs.html...See MoreRe-working front entry after driveway/paver renovation
Comments (41)Get a few small pots of stain in colors you like. Maybe a driftwood color, weathered teak, something mid- range- remember, a second coat will often darken the appearance of the color. Narrow your choices down to 3. Test them like you would interior paint colors. 2 coats. (Try large pieces of MDF board to test on) In my opinion charcoal is going to present as dirty or dusty black. Brown is like greige, many interpretations, can be made with many different base colors. I have used browns with greys and the right combo is very rich looking. Be open to something new, you may find a color you hasn't thought about that you will really like! It will take a little patience to do your homework, but it's hard to go wrong this way....See MoreHelp creating a second entrance from the driveway through French Doors
Comments (8)Definitely widen that stoop, so it is wider than the doors. I like the idea of it being wide enough to have big pots of flowering plants on both sides of the door. I think curving the stoop out would look nice, as long as the porch is wide enough and deep enough, for people to actually stand on safely. I dont mind the slider. I actually like sliders more than french doors, in some locations. There are some areas, that I dont like a door opening into the room, and I hate doors that open outward....See Morewestes Zone 9b California SF Bay
