The hydrangeas dried this year and kept their color. Not sure why, but they are still beautiful. Our garden club makes these for the local women's shelter for their apartment doors. We do wreaths and swags. My first attempt was a total failure, but a little research led to this version. It was easy to poke the stems into a grape form. The blossoms are bundled in small batches and hung upside down to dry. I also followed a suggestion - found on-line - to pick them when they were partially crispy - and that worked beautifully. The garden club will make 10, one for each door. It is a great project and everyone shares greens and boughs from their gardens. I sent the one below to my daughter-in-law and she loved it. Do you use any of your garden plants or blossoms for crafts?

Back when I lived on your side of the planet, I made wreaths from dried hydrangea flowers. And in much the same way, using dried grapevine cuttings that were in a wreath shape. We actually gathered and created the wreath forms ourselves at an event at San Michelle winery!! I used that wreath for a number of years (indoors) and loved how the flower colors changed subtly over that time.

It finally got too dusty and beat up so I tossed it. And for whatever reason, I did not make another. Maybe next year..................:-)

I second the comment that both the wreath itself and the making of door decorations for a women’s shelter is lovely.

i sometimes make evergreen swags for my doors, less from the garden and more from the woodlands and a couple of field trees on my property. Some years I buy balsam wreaths from the local school, but if I am not home when their sale happens or I forget, I just cut pine, hemlock and spruce (balsam and Norway) and add cones or berries that I find along with ribbon for decoration. I confess to not being very crafty at all.

I've shipped dried flower wreaths and other projects. However, the boxing is expensive if you're just a small timer like me. I live in a small town, but in a larger town about 20 miles from me is a box shop with about every size box you can imgine. But I'm looking at $5 to $6 per box, or more. I cut out a piece of cardboard smaller than the box I'm using to package the item in. I batton down the item to the piece of cardboard with the long twisties or yarn if I have to. But your project could get damaged where you batton down so I use tissue paper in that area to help. And I don't batton down real tight. Once battoned down to the cardboard, I cover the project with tissue paper and tape to hold the tissue paper on. I then use peanuts under and over the project to fill in the box. Best wishes!

If anyone has mentioned any of these, I apologize. Fasten the flower by the stem to the center spike of a chandelier--so there is a ball of florets instead of the tippet. Keep the flower away from the lightbulbs. Suspend the ball of flowers from the chandelier as you would a mistletoe ball. If you have a chain for a ceiling fan, attach the flower to the end of it. Fasten to a windchime; the light weight but larger surface of the flower will make it much more responsive to breezes. Fasten them to the tiebacks of your drapes. If you have sconces for outdoor lights, attach the flowers to them. Make a ball--whatever size you want--tuck the stems inside and suspend the resultant ball of flowers from the ceiling. You might hang it on the patio or other open space as well as indoors. If you're tired of the usual arrangements, try some of the following: Put one or more inside a trifle bowl. You may or may not want to add foliage, strong greens to contrast; grays, pale blues, pale pinks, to provide a softer look. Arrange lots in a big basket and set into the empty fireplace. Put one on a floating disc and float it in a bowl. The dampness will spoil the flower after a while, so you'll need to keep an eye on it. Put them in multi-colored plastic drink glasses and use as a centerpiece for your garden party. If you have a tiered cake or candy stand, arrange the flowers in a series of cascading layers. Put them underneath a glass cake cover and use it as a centerpiece. Ray

Thanks sylky00, I found that out too... I was wondering if theres something you could spray on them so they won't fall apart so much?? I've tried hair spray, clear paint, and these just make them more brittle, I was wanting something to make them stay pliable so they won't shed so much... linda

Lin, I've exchanged dried flowers and foliage, grass seedheads, and berried stems with friends in other parts of country for years. We've used bubble wrap or in some cases plain newspaper gently wrapped around and then scotchtaped, then - most important-- taped the wrapped item directly to box. Then the next wrapped bunch is taped to both the box and first item. This prevents shifting of packages inside shipping box. If the box isn't filled up you can create air-pillows by blowing into a ziplock bag then zipping to fill up excess room, or there is a commercial product that is essentially the 'air-pillow'. This step isn't really necessary if your wrapped item is securely taped to box to prevent shifting...but is just an added precaution. You might try sending a test package to yourself or a distant relative to test how it will fare. Also, you might want to place on top of items in box a note of caution to recipient to unwrap very gently using scissors carefully. Also, that Elmer's Glue is useful for reattaching loose items. Most folks would know this but there's always that one person...LOL Good luck. josh

Well... one year I cut long strands of the ivy on my house and wound it all up not knowing what to use it for. While it was it was in the garage I just kept adding flowers I either dead-headed or dried to it. I don't think I knew when to quit and the next thing I knew I had this Frankenstein's Monster...

I think I finally stopped when my wife said, "You know honey, I think that's enough".

I told a friend that I grew everything on it and the reply was, "I think everything you grow is on it".
