Deodar Cedar
Comments (2)Do it. They grow well in San antonio, Kerrville, comfort ... They just need a lot of space. They will look nicer and grow faster with a little irrigation. My untested theory is cedrus brevifolia is better in this part of texas . most nurseries in SA have Deodar cedars...See MoreDeodar Cedar Top Dead... Any action to take?
Comments (6)its already there.. its the branch on the left ... i would leave it alone .. for 2 to 4 years .. and then get up there one last time.. and reduce to one single leader.. that is tree time ... enjoy the process ... and dont fixate.. if its not a perfect arrow like it used to be ... a little kink up there is no big deal ... ken...See MoreFeelin Sunny Deodar Cedar "Help"
Comments (16)Thanks Sara! I remember when you posted about moving that larger Cedrus Tree. I moved a 5' White spruce a couple of years ago. It went well but in any case, having some help makes the job go easier. :^) The following is just for ideas, you may figure out easier ways. If you dig a trench around the tree, you can get a shovel in around the bottom and sheer the bottom roots cleanly (sharpen your shovel if it's dull). If I knew then what I know now I would have tipped the tree in one direction and shoved a tarp under one side and then tipped it the other way and pulled the tarp all the way under the root ball. Would have been much easier. :o) Instead I pulled the root ball up the plywood 'ramp' with straps using an ATV 4 wheeler and then slid the root ball onto the 4' orange sled you see in the first picture. I lost a little dirt on the slide, that's where a tarp would've protected and supported the bottom from rubbing off the dirt. Pulled it across the yard on the sled and placed it into the pre-dug hole that was about a foot wider than the root ball and the same depth or a little less than the root ball. Mulched and watered everyday for a week and bi-weekly after that depending on rain the rest of the season. Turned out pretty nice and I'm glad I did it. edit: added picture of pre dug hole 5-3-19...See MoreDoes this mature deodar cedar need pruning?
Comments (2)pruning is done for a GOAL ... not because its been a couple years .. or something like that ... what i cant tell from the pix... with this tree with huge potential so close to the house.. is whether it has been previously topped .. and has something going on inside the canopy.. that we cant see ... why does it have 4 leaders coming out about 2/3 of the way up the trunk??? i suspect a pretty little baby tree was planted much to close to the house.. with no real concept of its vast potential ... and perhaps.. it ought to go ... now that would be goal .. lol .. if there is any indication of significant interior pruning ... and the resultant wounds.. it might be time for an onsite inspection by a isa certified arborist ... real facts help set goals ... ken https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffcm&q=isa+certified+arborist&ia=web...See Moredirtygardener
