Name that Japanese Maple...Two Sango Kakus but One is an imposter
Comments (6)thank you Houston Texas, I think you're right. The 2nd post picture is the REAL Sango kaku based upon all my research and the 1st photo is not. I checked all the attributes of the 'Shindeshojo' and found that it is not in line with this JM. The Imposter Tree has a bright red bark, Spring and Summer shows Green leaves while fall is bright red leaves with bright red twigs. The Shindeshojo's leaves are red in spring. Although both have leaves of 5 lobes.Any other suggestions? -M Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreHelp Choosing a Coral Bark Japanese Maple
Comments (8)Personally, I don't think you can go too far wrong with Sango Kaku. I'd just want to make sure I obtained mine from a very reputable source, as I fear there are some inferior growing operations out there that are mass producing this tree, perhaps not from the choicest stock and the end result is some rather inconsistant, ill-formed and disease-prone trees. I bought mine 10 years ago. It has matured into a gorgeous, naturally perfectly shaped specimen (never taken pruners to it) about 18' tall. I've yet to see much redness on the leaves, even when first emerging and I'd describe the foliage color as a bright, grassy green. Fall color is a peachy gold. The tree is stunning in winter. The entire crown glows red with only the trunk and the largest and oldest portions of the major branches more of a greeny-brown. It certainly is not obvious to me that second year growth looses color, in fact quite the opposite. It is the canopy and branching structure you notice when not in leaf, not the trunk, and this has retained its coral red color extremely well....See MoreCoral Bark Japanese Maple Growing Large Leaves
Comments (5)I'm not an expert but I have a coral bark maple that has done the same thing. The first time, I cut the branches out, thinking it had to be a problem. Then I saw an episode of an Erica Glasner "Gardener's Diary" on HGTV where she visited someone with many Japanese maples. As they walked through the garden he pointed out a maple that had branches with the same larger leaves and said that the next year they would be the proper size. So, the next time it happened, I left them and sure enough, the next spring those branches had the proper sized leaves. I don't recal the variety of maple that was on the show. I have around 15 Japanese maples and the coral bark is the only one that has done this. Hope this helps....See MoreDead Coral Bark? Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku' Photos
Comments (3)If site becomes newly infested with verticillium or other pathogen or severe enough weather episode occurs age of tree not counterindication. Things like that can happen after 20 years. Japanese maples prone to disorders that cause dieback or quick death, sensitive to impeded drainage, often listed as hardy to Zone 6....See MoreFuad Efendi
