When do I start germinating my seeds?
Comments (8)See link below, it gives normal first and last frost dates for all over the US. How early exactly you want to start out depends a lot on what you're seeding, but my general rule of thumb is 4-6 weeks before the last frost date. For my area, last frost is April 3rd. It's suggestion of going 2 weeks earlier than that is generally a good one, so that would make it March 20th. 4-6 weeks prior to that would be 2/7-2/21. I'm getting antsy though, so I've already started quite a few peppers. I'll wait until end of Feb to start my tomatoes and corn though. Comments (18)I'm so excited that I didn't have any worms this year. We were all ready to have the tree taken down. I would have hated to do it but it's too close to the deck and I was soooo sick of caterpillar poo! The tree is absolutely beautiful this year. I had loads of blooms and now have lots of seed pods and the canopy is huge and provides a good deal of shade. There's still a chance that we cold get an infestation this season but I'm hoping that doesn't happen. I guess it's either a normal cycle or the strange temps this winter caused the pupa that were in the soil to die. I hope we don't have any next year either. I love to fish and can't stand the Catalpa worms but I could never put a hook through one of them. I have enough problems with an earthworm. lol Karyn...See MoreWinter sown corn vs direct sown corn
Comments (5)I have been trying various methods over the last few nights. Rolled up damp newspaper was my least favorite/effective method. White wine worked fairly well. Oil in a fishy smelling cat food can also worked well. But I tried the soy sauce/oil last night, and that was by far the most effective. I got about a dozen dead earwigs a night with the wine and oil/cat food. With the soy sauce method I probably had 200 dead earwigs overnight. A friend also told me 30-40 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract mixed in a small spray bottle and sprayed on and around the plants keeps them away. Hopefully with these two methods, I can get rid of them!...See MoreWhat Have You Winter Sown This Year and When?
Comments (9)My first WSing was on February 6. I planted yellow lupines and blue fescue (grass). On the 13th, i planted gaillardia, white lychnis, Shasta daisies, acquilegia 'Norah Barlow', hesperis matronalis (Dame's Rocket), Leopard's bane, echinacea (white), asclepias tuberosa (keep trying this....), campanula 'Blue Clips' and heliopsis var. 'Lorraine Sunshine'. These are not "buried", but sitting along the wall of house on the deck with snow heaped up around them. I can't reach the place where i usually put my WSing, so i just left them there. There won't be room for more, so i'll have to find another place to put what i intend to do this weekend (maybe) - got some seeds from a friend. :)...See Moresah67 (zone 5b - NY)
