good tasting strawberries for Zone 6?
Comments (8)Hi, I grow 'Mara des Bois' French strawberries that are medium size, sweet and a very true strong taste of strawberry. I also grow 'Fraise des Bois' Alpine strawberries, these are the very tiny ones. If you have squirrels you will have to protect your berries with wire, poles and netting. They are worse than birds and eat the berries while they are green! I've grown these strawberries for many years along with others but these are my two favorites. I think you'd like the 'Mara des Boise' a medium sized berry. Luscious!...See MoreMara des Bois-- replacement/runners
Comments (4)They grew like any other strawberry for me: they put out runners and you thin most of them and let a few replace the older plants. I expect someone was using "biennial" to describe how the newer runners don't produce berries their first year; I didn't notice behavior any different from your standard strawberry. Mrs G, I don't know why your plants are not producing runners. Scott...See MoreBest Grapes for zone 9b-10???
Comments (29)AZ is hotter than FL but its a dry heat thus so many less insects and fungal issues. Same for many parts of CA. Grapes grow awesome in Phx. We grew lots of yummy seedless grapes there. I really wish I could grow those types there. There is a bunch of blackish purple grapes growing wild all over our property. They have seeds and don't taste all that great. I let the chickens eat them. Maybe they are better for making jams? Anyone know of any seedless varieties that will grow in zn 9a (NE FL)?...See MorePlanting Strawberries in Zone 4 (Maybe zone 3)
Comments (2)Joe: I cannot help you on what varieties are best for North Dakota. I would refer to the suggestions by NDSU for that. They did research years ago on what varieties are best suited for North Dakota when I used to travel out there and I assume they still do. I read your comment about the catalog descriptions on all the varieties as "wonderful" and "delicious". I have found the same thing on apple descriptions. I have seen Honeycrisp apple described as "excellent for eating and cooking". Actually it is the worst apple I have ever cooked with and will never try that again. I have seen Wealthy apple described as a good eating apple too and it is not (strictly for cooking). You have to remember that nurseries want to sell what they grow so descriptions of "fruit is mushy and bland" is not going to make sales. Also flavor is very particular to the person sampling. I would not cross the street for a Tolman Sweet apple but many find it a very good apple. It should not matter where you buy a certain strawberry plant as far as plant hardiness is concerned. Hardiness is based primarily on genetics and also climatic conditions. A Sparkle strawberry plant produced in Georgia will be no less hardy than one produced in Missouri. Do order from a reputable nursery supplier however....See Moreahappy camper zone10
