Growing leeks and parsnips in North Florida
Comments (12)I am recent transplant to Florida. I grew parsnips the last 5 or so years in the midAtlantic. When planting, I covered the seeds lightly with soil, and then covered them with a couple sheets of newspaper and used rocks to hold down the newspaper. The newspaper helps keep the soil surface from drying. Start checking them after 5-7 days. I was able to get them sprouted in 7-10 days. As soon as you see the first ones sprouting, remove the newspaper. If you have deer or other animals that like to graze in your garden, parsnips are very good to grow. The leaves are toxic and I never had anything eat them. The down side is you need to handle with a little caution. I would usually leave some to go to seed. The plants get much taller and thicker when they go to seed, and one year I decided to thin them after they started bolting. The stems were pretty big with lots of sap and I got some on my arms that resulted in blistering similar to poison oak/ivy. I'm not sure I will get enough cold here in the Lake Tarpon area, but plan to give them a try....See Morebearded iris in North Florida

Comments (20)Update: Both coconuts died within a 3 weeks of being home. Last winter's brutal temps and my struggles to keep the greenhouse in one piece resulted in 2 dead coconuts. :( Laura in VB - if you're still on here - that's why you never got one. Sorry. However, I am not discouraged..... Generation 2 greenhouse is WAY stronger, better insulated, better heated etc. Temps dropped to 39 F ONCE during a power failure, and otherwise never fall below 48 at night. Day temps are routinely over 70 (usually 75-90). I don't know if this helps, but by way of comparison - my Cavendish banana flowered and is producing a huge bunch of fruit, all my citrus trees (especially the lemon) are flowering like crazy and growing fast. I would take this as a sign that a coconut should manage such conditions. SO - I have located a 5' tall coconut palm at a Home Depot in Jacksonville which I will take home this weekend. Hopefully the combination of getting in there with the worst of the winter behind us (hopefully), it being a bigger tree, and the improved greenhouse will mean success....See MoreWhich is better, north Florida or south Florida?
Comments (27)johnb51: That's what I have heard: that SW side is more economical and less crowded but it probably depends on 'where' exactly lol. I would have to be zoned agriculture and away from the larger cities a little bit since I have chickens and loud roosters. They do make good fertilizer! :P I was also born in L.A. but later moved to Phx AZ. I love it in FL. The humidity took some getting used to compared to the Southwest. I've been out here 3 years now. marinfla: I like your mango story. Its funny how little things can change our lives. Your yard sounds like paradise. I can't wait until I can put my fruit trees in the ground and not worry about freezes so much. Bob1016: Sounds like you had quite an education in fruit trees since you were very young. What a nice environment to grow up in! I can imagine that you miss it and your grandfather quite a bit. njoasis: Sounds fun! I just bet they do! Can you make a good mojito? lol...See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
