Asian Pear with black spots on leaves, small worm
Comments (3)Thanks scottfsmith! It seemed like spraying helped (and I found aphids on the tip leaves of both my pears). I am loathe to squish anything between my fingers but became so frustrated I finally did press the leaves together and rub in an effort to smash aphids without destroying the top growth. My top leaves on the Asian Pear died anyway but they seemed worse than my Turnbull Pear when I discovered the aphids. It is probably too early to tell if the problem is really resolving, but if not, I will take a pic and post it. I did definitely have a worm issue and aphid problems. I noticed a small scar on the Asian Pear trunk bark today about 18-24 inches above ground and hope its not fireblight. I have several animals in the back yard from time to time and they like to rub and get up against the trees also so I sort of thought they may have been the problem. The trunk is only about 1" diameter and animals could have damaged it although that seems a little high for my cats and small dog. Pics of fireblight have me worried. The sites recommend pruning 12 inches below any damage for fireblight, and since it's a young 6-8 ft tree, it seems crazy to cut it down nearly to the ground. I sure hope that is not what caused the bark damage I saw....See MoreIs anyone interested in a spring plant swap?
Comments (21)I live in Wappingers Falls and I went to a plant swap in CT last spring. I would love to have a plant swap in Dutchess County, with the cost of gas these days! I've got lots of campanula, gaillardia and some asters to swap. Probably more things as time goes on. If there is a Dutchess County swap, please give details. The one I went to in CT was very casual -- people came and put their plants to swap on tables. Everyone browsed for awhile and took what they wanted. It was hosted by a nursery, who provided meats (hamburgs and hot dogs) and buns. Everyone else brought side dishes and desserts. It was so fun and relaxing. I've seen other plant swaps listed where they have "rounds" where you pick a certain amount of plants, depending on how many you bring. I think it would work either way; I really enjoyed the one I went to, though, because it didn't feel like any "plant police," it was just fellow plant lovers trading away their extras with no strings attached....See MoreGood worms, bad worms?
Comments (5)All earthworms are beneficial to the soil. Unfortunately some introduced species are a bit too efficient in their activities and too prolific in their populations and create imbalances in the organic matter of some Northeastern native forests and woodlands, to their detriment. But in the home garden, all worms are beneficial and indicate a healthy amount of organic matter in the soil. I can contemplate all sorts of good reasons to screen compost and there is really no reason the presence of worms should deter you. The small ones will fall through the screening and larger ones can be tossed back into the pile or relocated to planting beds. It's all good :-) Here is a link that might be useful: earthworms...See MoreAsian Jumping Worms, anyone?
