idea for this hill???
Comments (16)I agree that the drainage function is clearly important, but I don't think that drawing the beginning of the slope back toward the trees as Inkognito suggests would necessarily interfere with that. Obviously you don't want to soften the grade by dumping excess soil at the bottom! It is always tempting to deal with an area where grass does not grow well by ripping out the grass and replacing it with something. The problem is that EVERYTHING, other than some sort of paving, is more work than grass, especially if you still have grass elsewhere and so will still be walking right by the area with the mower anyway. In contrast, we are just taking out a small lawn area in our back yard that is the only grass we have. So we will have to do other garden work, but we will not have to get the mower out at all. If you remove sod for something other than paving, you will be on your hands and knees weeding, or wielding a string trimmer, or spreading mulch, on an ongoing basis, AND likely doing a lot of work up front removing sod, installing rocks, and so on. If you WANT to do that, that's fine (and we do). But if you are trying to avoid the work of lawn care, well... Karin L...See Morepotato hilling dilemma: hill in sog or hill late?
Comments (5)Oh good -- thanks guys. It seems like I can make my old folks happy by going early for the visit, and it really helps to feel like things will be fine for another week. Plus it's been pouring all morning. And I promised them peas and kale. I was thinking it would be nice to have a pair of sterile gloves for harvesting at times like this!...See MoreAccessible Landscape help
Comments (4)Your photo is so tiny I can't see it. However, I don't need a photo to give advice for wheelchair access. The only way to maneuver a hill while in a wheelchair is by using ramps and switchbacks that crisscross the slope. The Americans with Disabilities Act recommends a rise of 1 inch over 12 ft of distance. With assistance from another person the recommendation is 2 inches rise over 12 ft. The recommendation for an electric wheelchair is only 1.5 inches per 12 ft.. While you can exceed these recommendations, you should remember that spaces to stop and rest along the route are important. These turning spaces also allow the speed of descent to be slowed. Try to make some of the turning spaces into overlooks. Place a chair or bench next to an open space to accommodate the wheelchair. These spaces can be destination points in their own right. The only other option I can think of is a personal hillside TRAM. These inclined elevators usually carry two to four people. They are expensive and do require maintenance; however, you should compare the costs with the total cost of paving multiple switchbacks....See Moreideas re landscaping hill/retaining wall and backyard
Comments (1)In order to have pavers and walk that made sense, one would need to know destinations within the yard and the uses needed by the occupants. We know neither. For the sloping border, decide which is needed: screening, or screening and shade. Plant a row of small trees or large shrubs that extend above the fence to provide screening and/or shade. The plants can touch, as in a hedge, or they can be spaced out depending on the degree of screening desired. Grow groundcover below the trees/shrubs. Could add an accent plant here or there. The turf needs to be reestablished for appearance and as a functional space for activities & pedestrian circulation....See Morekulrn
