kate_rose, you can do it; but it does require patience and mental stamina. For many years, "Terro" was the most effective bait that I could recommend for 'sweet-loving' ants inside the home. Then the owners of the process appeared to have a falling out. For a long time the product was unavailable; then it appeared under the original name - and a number of others. I no longer could recommend it. A lot of commercial applicators relied on us. Credibility was a precious trait. Another factor to bear in mind is that some ants alternate between a 'protein' diet and a carbohydrate diet. I do not know if the species with which you are dealing belongs to this group. (How quickly I forget, these days). "Maxforce" puts out some very good baits for roaches; I do not know about their products against ants. But, back to basics! "Hydramethylnon" was very effective against fire ants outdoors; and I would venture to say that if there is an indoor ant bait containing the product, it will work for you indoors - while you take care of the outside. If you are wary (and we all ought to be) of chemicals, then the self contained traps are best. If you are paranoid about chemicals (medical conditions justify this) use sticky traps. There are 'motels' (for roaches) or even glue traps for rodents. Lure your pests by placing an attractive sweet substance therein. Do not forget to throw them out after a while. My own pet (purposely misspelt) theory is that, if effective, these devices exude the 'scent of death' and will repel prospecting guests. Make quite sure that no! none!! nada!!! (is that enough emphasis?) vegetation touches the outside wall, eaves or roof of your house. Pruners, loppers saws (chain or hand) are indicated. After that would be the time for the caulking gun, mesh and "Great Stuff" . If these all make sense to you, then you will understand that exclusion is one of the first principles of insect and disease control. To complete the exclusion concept, apply a chemical barrier all the way around the base of the exterior walls of the house, follow the vertical and top horizontal edges of doorways. Apply twice to the thresholds. Again, the chemicals range from the benign aromatic oils like peppermint; to the residual pyrethroids. The garage and its door present a challenge. Ok we are back to the feral cats. What will eat the mice, rats, squirrels, and other things when the cats are gone. I believe I have read that cyotes are becoming a problem in many cities. We have resident bobcats, cougars, skunks, and lots of racoons in this area. I do not feed cats outside but am aware that in areas that have removed the cats others will move in to eat the expanding food supply. I would rather have the cats than some of the others. The catch and release programs have helped reduce the population of feral cats by neutering them. Something that the original owners did not do. If you have heard of a person releasing or dumping a cat normally with kittens have you spoke up? If not you are a major part of the problem. If more people spoke up the next time someone wants to show the joy of birth to their children with out a thought of what to do will the kittens less cats would be dumped. Even no kill shelters must cull the older and less healthy cats to make room for more. When you see a cat with the tip of it's ear cut off this is a sign that it was caught, given shots, fixed then released. To reduce the number of feral cats and give all cats a good chance at life humans need to become more active and vocal. I have wondered if a poll was done what animal's would people pick to replace the outdoor cats. Since removing the cats would create a vacuum and nature does not like a vacuum what would the posters like to replace the cats? I would like never to have homeless cat but know without outdoor cats we could go back to the middle ages when mice and rats were everywhere because people did not like cats and thought they were bad luck.

Sally2, I went and checked my son's other allergies. Regarding the cobalt allergy, it's easy to avoid clothes that have rivets and metal zippers and when it's not avoidable you can cover the metal with clear nail polish. Toluene free, preferably. And I forgot to mention the BIG one that he's allergic too: Fragrance. Fragrance is not always listed as Fragrance, sometimes it is listed are Parfum. I don't know why the French spelling is in otherwise English language labelling, but there you are. As an aside, there are chemicals called Pthalates that are the carrier for the fragrances. Pthalates are bad for you, I think they are petrochemical based and carcinogenic too, you want to avoid them even if you aren't allergic. They are in most personal care and scented home products. For cleaning more often than not I used organic Dr. Bronner's with either the Peppermint or Tea Tree essential oil. You can even use this as a body wash and some people brush their teeth with it, it's that safe.
