WANTED: Many Species........Have lots to trade.......
Comments (1)Hi, I have some Orthophytum to trade. At the moment I have O. rubrum pups (separated from mother plant but not yet rooted) and almost-full-grown Orthophytum 'Warren Loose' (this is *not* a hybrid, just a form of O. gurkenii that has trichomes evenly distrubuted over the leaf surface instead of in bands). It's a bit harder to find than gurkenii, also a bit slower to propagate since it does not produce pups on top of the inflorescence, only at the base... I have other Orthophytum not on your list, hybrids and true species--let me know if you're looking for any other species I also have some access to Texas endemic cacti, if you're looking for anything like that. Please let me know if you're interested. What I'm looking for: succulent/pachyform Geraniaceae. Pachyform Pelargoniums, Monsonias and *especially* Sarcocaulons. Take care, Chris...See MoreSun or shade?
Comments (5)Gail, Not too many neos will handle 2-3 hours of full Brisbane sun, Neos with leaves that are tough to feel will handle more sun than Neos with supple leaves, Dark coloured Neos will generally handle more sun than the lighter coloured Neos. If you have multiples, I would suggest that you try a few in differant locations but label them, I have moved plants around and forgotten which is which - they can change appearance quite dramatically. Spring is a good time to move plants out into more light to climatise, if you see the leaves fading it is the first signs of burn and they should be moved to less light, pups attached to parents will climatise better than parents - I was told why once but have forgotten. Neos will all generally do well with morning and afternoon light exposure in our climate. Cheers, Rick...See MoreSucculents and Friends from Annie's Annuals
Comments (19)hopefulauthor, I was really just doing my shopping for Christmas and birthdays. With those, and some other non-succulents (13 total plants) my wagon was completely full. I still got away for less than $50. I probably will keep the Cussonia. I bought one last time I was there--C. transvaalensis (also originally intended as a gift) and couldn't part with it. That one--during a 25% off sale--cost me less than $4. These are old pictures. More than half of the foliage has turned red, so it actually looks better: Cussonia transvaalensis from above: Cussonia transvaalensis from the side: You can probably see that the pot is bulging and the soil is also being pushed up on the top. I took a peek--the part you see above ground is only a fraction of the caudex. Hopefully I can get a picture when I repot it. Annie's has a couple amazing pictures of this species on their site: http://anniesannuals.com/plants/plant_display.asp?prodid=3067&account=none When I picked up this plant I passed on a different one--that may have been a big mistake. It's the only one I saw that branched into two trunks at the base. I didn't pick it because I was planning on giving it as a gift and the snowflake appearance of the leaves wasn't as clear due to the proximity of the trunks. Oh, well. Here's another plant I regret not buying at my most recent trip. It seems strange that they would have discounted it that much(to $7.25 pre-sale) but that's what I remember. http://www.anniesannuals.com/plants/plant_display.asp?prodid=3110&account=none...See MoreBackyard Nursery
Comments (9)I seem to be learning something new every day. Bakersfield is indeed hot and sunny most of the time. We're basically a desert here. I've recently noted that the concrete of the patio absorbs heat, heats the plants and is in effect responsible for withering some of my saplings and preventing germination of some seeds. That happens even with the window screen coverings blocking some of the sunlight. It's like you need to mist constantly to lower the temperatures, but I can't do that right now. I moved all the seed starter cups into shade and to my delight, some of them started sprouting within a day after the move. Just getting them into the lower temps of shade turned them on! You've got to be observant when you start planting seeds and especially with variety. Read up what others on the web have written about propogation of particular seeds on the web. It helps. If I showed you another picture today, everything except for established seedlings has been moved into shade along the fences, building and between those climbing rose bushes and remarkably, with better results. My Canna x Generalis seeds responded almost immediately after being moved to shade and before that, I just could not get them to germinate, even though other people seem to be saying that they are easy to germinate. I've read some stuff about certain seeds, for example, Cyclamen seeds, where the author of the article describes placing the seed starting medium in dark containers under stair steps in deep shadows to get them to germinate before bringing them out into the sun. And Cyclamen are not mushrooms! Go figure?...See MoreAlain (Pacifica, CA;10a)
