When it comes to freaks my favorite is Imperatrice Fara. It starts off a whitish green and tans red in the parts exposed to sunlight. Every rose is different. They also last supper long so some are green others are both some are much more red. It is a strange and beautiful rose. No sent but special none the less. I have nothing else like it. Make sure your plants have stakes or cages that will handle the vines when they are 2 or 3 times the current height. I'll let someone else address the Brandywine issue. Bumping this thread to the top to answer Rose's question about 18" of space on the side.... Yes, if it were my home, I would treat the windows as one, put in a very nice rod across the tops and use stationary panels on the two sides. Even with a nice 54" wide panel, the folds compress to show only 15" or so of drape on the side, that's how mine are hung in the LR and in my bedroom. That's what creates the lush look with fabric, the wide width pleated or gathered together to hang in the smaller space... If it were me, because I must have a mockup in anything I do before I spend time & money, I would get some masking tape or push pins and create a drape on each side of my window using an old sheet. You can hang it gathered a bit so that the side goes to the edge of the wall and the other side gently overhanging the edge of your trim. Step back and evaluate. If you like the general look, you will love it when you get your choice of color and pattern there, perhaps with some fringe trim on the leading edge as shown in the the photo above. Red

I'm also jealous of gardeners who can look at a plant and know just what it wants, water, fertilizer, etc. Me, I don't have that sixth sense. I put a plant in the ground, water it a few times, and then it's on it's own. If it lives, great, it belongs in my garden, if it dies it doesn't belong. I have tried babying some Japanese maples in the past, and they still choked. My best luck is in pots, but even then, I've lost them. My only survivor in the ground, is a viridis cut-leaf one, in dry, complete shade of Norway maples and black locusts. It doubled it's size in 20 years, now about 2' x 3'. I love seeing them in other peoples gardens though.This is my background screen at the moment, Full Moon maple from Longwood Gardens a few years back
