Yellowing Leaves on Wild Violets

Does anyone know what causes this? I am currently in Upland California. Trying to rehab my Mother In Laws Rose Garden. She has hybrid teas and wild violets. The roses are just 'sitting' there, no new growth but leaves are green. The violets are growing well enough but the leaves on many of them are yellowed. Does anyone know what problem this indicates?

Most likely a sign that it is entering dormancy. Violets and their cousins pansies are cool season plants and generally inclined to go dormant or very close to it in the heat of summer. They come back to life again in fall with cooler temperatures and more plentiful rainfall and in many climates will continue on through winter, blooming as their habit and the weather permits.

Viola pubescens, Downy Yellow Violet, seems to be 'the' violet with heart shaped leaves and a stem with both flowers and leaves. Looks like there used to be a non-downy one, too, V. pennsylvanica, but they got lumped together under Viola pubescens. WW Here is a link that might be useful: Downy Yellow Violet, Viola pubescens

Yellowing leaves could be caused by: Too much light Too much fertilizer Not enough fertilizer pH problems If the plants are getting around 12 hours per day of light that would not be too much. More for an extended length of time could cause yellowing. Water pH or soil pH could be the problem. You can get test strips in some nurseries, Walmart, etc. If she could just eliminate each of these, she will be able to find out what is causing the problem. Nancy
