Suggestion for aphid control..

hibiscus shrubs and a few other bushes in yard are literally COVERED in aphids the black in the second pic is all bugs! Any suggestions on how to control so many I've only seen a couple lady bugs hoping more move in they're spreading to my other plants blasts of water are not working so far there is just too many

1. Research the plant, specifically it and pest spray, to know if there are times of day or places on the plant you shouldn't spray!

2. Make sure to be thorough, so you don't force selection of résistent bugs.

3. I use chopped/pressed Garlic, about 2 TBS; plain pure Castile soap, 1/4-1/2 tsp bronners; mint essential oil a few drops; to 1 qt water. Shake welllll, drain through a cheese cloth, pour into spray bottle, spray on foliage. You should stop spraying 2 weeks before harvest.

4. Try planting strong smelling alium types nearby, and set or sow the same day you first spray. Plant sets fully underground, then spray. These plants keep aphids away, especially garlic.

5. Internet search natural pest spray for other recipes that are food friendly. (Assuming you are making tea). Try companion planting as part* of a long term strategy.

Thanks so much to everyone for the continued advice. The pyrethrum is a new one to me - if the DE doesn't work, I'll move on to that. I had considered the Sevin dust, in extremis - it's been mentioned several times as the Holy Hand Grenade of critter control in various threads. Honestly, one reason I hadn't gone there is that the label does not identify aphids among the five or six dozen insects that the dust controls, so I figured that the little buggers weren't affected by it. The other is my daughter, just turned three today. While I'm reasonably confident I can keep her out of the garden until the dusts and sprays settle, I'm still a bit reluctant to use anything too potent. I'm not losing my veggies just to stay organic, but I'm not risking exposing my daughter to something nasty just for veggies. Albaby

Kimmsr, you don't douse all of the insects with Neem. You mist the foliage. But even if our beneficials were to come into direct contact with neem, damage would be limited. As schmoo and an dozen others have tried to explain to you, neem needs to be ingested. Wooly aphids are aphids, not mealybugs. Sometimes, adelgid species are mistaken for wooly aphids, as are wooly scale and other species. There are also species of plant hoppers that are 'wooly' and jumpy. Many of these pest insects can be persistent, not easily sprayed off with water. I think that I'd go after these insects with the insecticidal soap, which can get through that 'wool', often containing zillions of eggs. My applicator would be a hand sprayer or pump sprayer, which I could use to direct the pesticide to the pest. Insecticidal soap, which IS a broad spectrum pesticide, must come into contact with the insect in order to affect it. Spray the heck out of those wooly critters! Here is a link that might be useful:

ok here goes from a brother in Canada... you can get aphids... just look for your indoor hydro shop. alberta might be a stretch to find but there are many ladybug suppliers up here. the place i get them from orders them for me and it takes 2 days. aphid control for about 5 weeks i have kept aphids undercontrol simply by taking the infected plants outside and spraying them off with water. very very lazy but if i stop they will win. but my method (which has started now) is to use 2 weeks of safers soap (every 3-4 days)then neem oil for 2 weeks same regiment. i know some people have had great sucess with ladybugs but others havent. i find them lazy and very creative with ways to kill themselves. as far as co2 to kill pests good luck! i really dont think it will happen. i tried heat and humidity to kill mites and no luck...a day at 130 degrees and nothing! pests are called that becasue they aint wimps. good luck try squishin them... not effective but raises the moral.
