Anyone growing species Canna jaegeriana?

I friend from San Francisco shared some seed from his C. jaegeriana plants with me last fall. He originally collected the seeds in Ecuador. Apparently, this is a high-elevation species and it grows well in cooler climates like they have in San Francisco. Does anyone grow this? There isn't much information online about this species. Most information on cannas is on the large-flowered hybrids. Looks to be a tall, simple-flowered species. I have several sprouted plants and some seed leftover.

I have not
grown this specie of canna, but I can supply an abbreviated taxonomic description
published by Dr. Nobuyuki Tanaka in his “Taxonomic Revision of The Family of
Cannaceae”.

It is rather
technical but can be used to compare to the canna seedlings you are growing for
potential confirmation. Specific documented growing locations included Haiti,
Dominica, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. I cannot confirm the
latitude of these locations.

Plant 2.0 – 3.5 m in height.

Rhizome, underground stem shortly
tuberous. Type A rhizomes.

Leaves narrowly ovate to elliptic,
acute to acuminate, decurrent at the base, fresh green on both surfaces,
distinctly lanuginose on lower surfaces and sheath, 35 – 80 cm long, 15 – 35 cm
wide.

Inflorescences terminal spike-like
raceme, usually branched, 10 – 30 cm long.

Petals 3, reddish, lanceolate, 4 – 6.5
cm long.

Sepals 3, oblong-lanceolate to narrowly
triangular, ca. 1.0 cm long, pinkish white, glaucous.

Staminodes 3, obovate to spathulate,
5.5 – 6.5 cm long, orange, obtuse or dentate at the apex.

Floriferous bracts oval-orbicular,
greenish white, glaucous, caduous, ca. 1.0 cm long.

Labellum erect or slightly curved,
entire or dentate at the apex.

Functional stamen with 1-celled anther
attached to its margin, 5.5 – 6.0 cm long, yellow with orange spots.

Style linear, orange.

Capsules distinctly ellipsoid, 3.5 - ?
cm long, 1.5 – 3.5 cm in width, numerous seeded, becoming transparent with age.
Seeds narrowly ellipsoid, shinny black with reddish brown spots, 0.7 – 0.8 cm
in dia.

This species is easily distinguished
from other taxa by the curved, orange
flowers, erect labellum, and narrow leaves. The seeds are small, brown
spotted, elliptic and somewhat rectangular in shape. The capsules are
oblong-elliptic, and become transparent with age.

It would be
interesting to know the progress of your seedlings.

The purchased seed should work fine. Seed is not a problem if the pollination of the plant producing the seed is controlled. The seed produced in your garden is from a plant produced from a cross and can revert to either parent or anything in between. The purchased seed will be an F1 cross where both parents are known and the resulting seed is predictable, though not as predictable as a plant produced from a vegetative part of a plant with no sex involved. Newbie in nj, Many cannas do quite well in containers. My intentions were directed to those who live in areas that generally do not have to lift and winter store. Pot growing simply requires more attention and care and the plant can become root bound. The taller varieties often get blown over and some find the need to anchor their pots. Our large flowered cannas (garden hybrids) usually do not attract humming birds etc as well as the smaller flowered varieties. Some of the recent post listed ÂRobert KempÂ (canna compacta) as being a good choice for both the flower and bird attractant. The larger flowered dwarf cultivars are excellent choices for containers simply because they tend to grow much shorter and bloom somewhat sooner. Relative speaking of course! The ÂFuturity SeriesÂ of dwarf cannas are a group of shorter growing cultivars that would be ok in pot culture. There are a number of others. I definitely disagree with the "crowded" reference. I think maybe there was a communication misunderstanding. Overcrowding in containers or in beds is not a good situation for the plants. Just for the sake of discussion; dwarf varieties need roughly two to three feet between plants; the really tall varieties may require three to four feet between individual plants growing with plenty of sun. These suggestions are simply rough guidelines and can be adjusted to your situation. Containers can be started side by side and adjusted as the plant matures. This is not a good option for plants in established beds! Hi Im from Holland and I do have a collection from over the 100 species gingers...there are cold hardy species.... hedychium ,Zingiber, costus, species...and roscoea species are also cold hardy. I do dig them up (al the species but not the roscoea's i leave them in the ground) and put them in early spring in pots and plant them in my garden when there is no frost. I dig them up because i want to see them flower...gingers do flower late. In addition to Ceylon spinach, Brazilian spinach, this showed up - all succulent and substituted for spinach. Ceylon spinach looks beautiful too, but Jewels of Opar takes the prize! Thanks again.

I grow Canna jaegeriana in Orange County, CA, Zone 10A. I was lucky to have one seed (of 10) germinate a few years ago. This species likes lots of water during the warm months and protection from wind. In your area, full sun should be no problem. I have only grown it in a container so far but it has been hardy and evergreen, as have all the Canna species I have tried.
