Will plants grown from seeds from the same rose hip be the same?
Comments (5)Were they hybrid varieties to begin with? If so then what you will get from their seeds normally will be two to four (on average) different types depending on their parental lines. That is assuming only two parents. If they were older open-pollinated (heirloom) varieties then their seeds will usually breed true. And since you cross-pollinated them the variables increase to 16-20 if hybrids. So you will need to grow out most of the seeds, select the ones with the characteristics you want to keep, grow them out, select again, etc. Normally it takes 6-7 generations of selecting and growing out to stabilize a cross-pollinated hybrid variety. Comments (6)I have had some success with rosa rogosa seeds. They are on there 3rd year and about 10 inches high, so its going to take a couple more years probable to get them to flower. I had a small smattering of germination after the first winter, which is why I kept the container, I placed it in shade for the summer really kinda forgetting about it. The next year, lo and behold another 20 or so seeds germinated in it. Its now finally sitting in the ground at my new place. It might have grown quicker if I didnt take so long to take it out of the milk jug home =). R Rogosa will come true from seed since its a species rose, there a couple dozen species roses you can do this with. Silverkelt...See Moreseeds from berries rose hips can I plant them indoor now?
Comments (4)I would also take some extra fresh hips, soak them and remove the fruit from the seeds, do not let the seed dryout, plant them right away in a pot and keep it outside and moist, let the winter do it's thing and you would get some sprouting in the spring. I got rose hips to sprout in place right in the ground this way too. See the winter propagation info on the seed propagation forum. I think it is still in the FAQ link at the top of the forum. I just went over there and now there is a separate forum on winter sowing, too. Here is a link that might be useful: winter stratification etc...See MoreCan I plant seeds from an old rose hip?
Comments (1)If they're very dried out chances are they won't but what the heck, I'd go ahead and give them a try anyway. What could it hurt?...See MoreAmber Truter-Meyer
