Deer repellents and hummingbirds

I would like to attract more hummingbirds to my garden. I have some red flowers in mind to attract them. Right now, I have some daylilies, which I like and I believe hummingbirds do too. However, my resident deer adore the daylily buds. If I want to get any flowers, I have to spray the buds. Will these sprays (deer away, liquid fence, etc) which make the buds unappealing to deer also keep hummingbirds away? Once the flower opens, the deer usually don't eat them, so I only spray the buds. I want hummingbirds to enjoy my daylilies, but the deer will demolish them first, unless I spray them.

All I can contribute is that I've sprayed hardy fuchsias which both deer (stems) and hummingbirds (flowers) love with Bobbex deer repellent and that hasn't slowed down the hummingbirds feeding. I don't know if all products have the same effect - or lack of one ;0). It does help with deer.

I spray my day lilies with liquid fence (very strong wild urine smell), and it doesn't seem to deter hummers from visiting feeders or salvia etc. Never seen a hummer on day lilies, tho that doesn't mean they don't visit. Save your day lilies, hummers will find other stuff to feed on.

If deer do not browse pawpaws (which is what I have read but can't attest to personally) and given that pawpaw leaves do have that distinctive smell (which makes the claim more believable) you wonder if an extract from pawpaw leaves or bark could be used as an effective deer repellent if sprayed on other plants. Or, better yet, a cheaper synthesized version.

Deer will grow used to about anything like oder repellants, water sprinklers,flashing lights you name it. I control mine here but you may not be able to do it in our area with a 410Ga shotgun with target loads in it. At 30 ft that will not penatrate the tough hide on a deers rump. But it will certainly deliver a very strong long lasting memory. If you can manage to catch them out in the dark. the combination of the roar of the shotgun the muzzel flash and the sting of the shot is just about enough to keep them away from the area for a life time. I had a whoile herd scared to come into my area for a couple of years but a a cpuple bucks wondered in from other ares this year and I had to clarify the boundries to them.

Has anyone tried 'Deer Fortress' deer repellent?

I first used Deer Fortress this spring and love it - it really works! I've used other products, including Liquid Fence, but reapplying was a hassle. I haven't had to reapply Deer Fortress and it's been almost three months. I have the Deer Fortress stakes/containers in both my flower and vegetable gardens, and both have been deer-free all spring and summer. I've recommended Deer Fortress to my neighbors (we live in a urban area that is densely populated with deer), and they have had similiar success with this product.

Sounds like you should market that! My grandparents had to have a huge, tall fence. Cayenne is how I got my dog to stop digging holes in my yard and it's inexpensive!

I sprayed my Impatients with Liquid Fence and witnessed bees and hummingbirds exploring but not feeding. I believe it must leave a bad taste that they don't like.

Does anyone know how I can get it off my flowers?
