Usually Spring. But for the second year in a row there is no winter. Usually I heat orchids by late November. But it has not been needed yet. So with warm weather the Catts continue to grow and bloom.
Intermedia's are a great species from Brazil's coast line. If you like to water a little heavy, this is a good group of plants to have and so many variations and popular with breeders. Great looking flower....
My standard intermedia is variable as it blooms 2-3 times per year and is currently in bud under lights. It could be because most of my orchids move from indoors to outdoors every year, so they may be getting tricked. As I recall my aquinii(sp?) and orlata behaved the same way.
On another note, my STD intermedia is mounted and grows p-bulbs and leaves of @6" total, but my potted aquinii and potted orlata grew to be 12+", same experience for you guys?
I have 2 intermedia orlata's. They were planted at the same time. One is mounted on cork and the other is potted in terra cotta with lava rock. They have the same exposure. The potted is growing larger and a little faster. The mounted looks healthy but not as big...
I have grown every type of intermedia out there and all were on baskets hanging with the vandas and loved it. This evolved from using pots even though they are more forgiving of over watering than other catts,
Most of my orchids including intermedia, are in clay pots with lava rock in hanging baskets. Plants over grow the pot and populate the basket. Repoting comes years later when the basket rots. Those that like that evolve here and those that do not are traded away or darwinized...The orlata on this thread was repotted a year ago from a rotted wood basket...
