H. reginea x neopardinom
Comments (14)your welcome. I also found this in a recent ebay auction: Hippeastrum pardinum (first image) is often mixed up with H. neopardinum (third image, not up for bidding in the current offer), a dubious taxon which is said to be found near a village called Atén in Nor-Yungas Province of the Department of La Paz, Bolivia. Some growers consider that H. neopardinum to be a variation of H. pardinum as âÂÂneoâ is a Latin prefix which stands for âÂÂnewâÂÂ. Len Doran opines that the prefix is assigned to H. neopardinum as it is âÂÂsimilarâ / âÂÂclosely allied toâ H. pardinum. My observation of the flowers and growth habit suggests that there are significant differences between the two: the dotted pattern of H. pardinum appears to be rather coarse (see first image and second image of a drawing extracted from plate 633 of Flore des Serres, with courtesy). Nevertheless, H. neopardinum is noticeably distinguished by the fine, linear pattern. Besides, the segments of H. pardinum are largely elliptical-ovate in shape but the segments of H. neopardinum are lanceolate with an acute apex. In cultivation, H. pardinum is always self-sterile and multiply slowly by means of vegetative growth. On the contrary, H. neopardinum is a self-fertile species which makes viable seeds....See MoreHippeastrum 'Rebel' -- Maguire's Hippeastrum Farm!
Comments (6)Hi Josh, Yup..looks just like mine did...I though maybe they'd be a bit different... the same right down to the speckled tongue!! I hope you got a change to at least self it since Rebel sets great seedpods..I have about 15 or so from my selfing that survived and are doing very well. I only had one stalk and only two flowers though..hope you got 4 flowers..Thanks for posting, I was dying to see another one! Donna...See MoreGuess I won't be buying H. Pardinum anytime soon
Comments (14)Hi Maida, I agree! I would rather fly to South America for a habitat field trip with Mauro than spend that kind of money on one bulb. With patience, time, and research, it is possible to find almost all of the Hippeastrum species for prices that aren't painfully high. Happily, building friendships across the globe and trading over the years have helped me to slowly increase my core species collection. Have a good week T.F.! ;-)Blanca...See MoreMoaic Virus Resistance
Comments (15)Thanks Justin, I also have Morelianum and Psittacinum growing from Mauro's seeds. Strangely, I have noticed the exact opposite in growing them - weird. I have them growing together and although they are both evergreen, Psittacinum seemed to slow down on growth and resent any water as the days got shorter. Morelianum - not so much. They are both in a somewhat gritty mix with granite rocks on the bottom for drainage. I moved a couple of the Psittacinum in a place where it stayed dry longer but neither group showed any difference (in other words, neither rotted or dropped leaves). I was thinking that psittacinum required a dryer environment in winter, but am still trying to figure that out. I received a small H. caupolicanense as an exchange and have babied that one along. I agree it seems to like more water/humidity and I have it in a mix of potting soil and a special orchid mix so I can water it more often. It was slow to start any growth in the beginning when I noticed that it had a lot of roots close to the surface. So I covered it with more of the mix (no bulb showing) and watered it more and it started to throw off some nice growth. It is in an orchid pot so its roots could breathe in case I was giving it too much water. It seems to like warmth, water and sun. Can you post picture of your plant so I can see what this will look like when it grows up :) I wish I could give you more information for growing the others, but except for Diana Chapman's blog, there is not much on how to grow them in pots. There is information on where they were grown but I don't always find that helpful. Sometimes the obvious is not always. As an example, when someone on this forum mentioned that aulicum didn't like it too hot, I realized why my aulicum and aulicum hybrids were not happy outside in the hot, humid summers. I looked for shaded places until it cooled down and they did much better. I might not have gleaned that from reading that they come from climates where the temps were steady and mild. go figure lol Again, thanks for sharing and hopefully some other species growers will chime in and we will all learn something. - J Also, to avoid confusion, since I grow the species inside (except for papilio) I can't comment on how resistant they are to mosaic virus. The hybrids seem to be resistant except for a very few which were removed and thrown away immediately. I have wondered if the plant is able to fight the virus but that's another conversation....See Moredondeldux z6b South Shore Massachusetts
