French Doors vs. Sliding Glass Doors
Comments (10)I have both - French doors that open into my sunroom, then sliders that open from my sunroom onto my deck on one side, the patio on the other side. I have double sliders that open from our walkout basement to the screened-in porch. I prefer the sliders to the french doors because they don't take up any clearance space and they seal tighter in the winter. I had all french doors in my former house and they were drafty. I used them in this house in places where they wouldn't be exposed to the outside (great room to sunroom, main hallway to office)and because they gave me the same effect as a Nana wall at about 1/3 the price....See MoreRetractable Screens for Marvin Sliding Door
Comments (9)So far we love our Marvin slider. As spring progresses we've found we can't open it as much - too many bugs! It needed some adjustment at the beginning. A rep came out and adjusted it no problem. Marvin has been fabulous! We have a set of two very tall French doors in another room. After they were installed last fall they were fine. Then we got a lot of rain. Slowly the bottom of one swelled and started hitting the bottom of the other and eventually we couldn't open the door. The Marvin person came, saw the problem, and ordered us a whole new set of doors about 1/8" narrower (these are very expensive doors). When he came back to install them (a few months later due mostly to us) the original doors were fine. He said he thought that might happen (companies use very green wood to make doors so they may take some time to get to their proper size). He left the new doors with us - so we have a spare in case something happens to the others. So far the same person has come back to do all the servicing. He's from Marvin itself. (The contractor also has the store that sold us the windows as a back-up but so far we haven't needed them). He's great - fixed a couple of other small problems. I really feel like they stand behind their products. We're having a lot of problems with our Miele appliances - their service is supposedly great but there's no comparison. Miele is a total pain, Marvin is a total pleasure....See MoreSliding screen at back door
Comments (9)Folks will sometimes replace the sliding screen door with a generic replacement that might not be of the same quality as original equipment manufacturer. It might be worth a call to the door manufacturer to see what your options are. Otherwise, one of the "dog screens" might be a good choice. The furry weatherstrip comes in rolls at your local home center/hardware store. Usually in the same department as door hardware. It is self sticking. Clean off the old adhesive first. Try Goof Off or Goo Gone. Not sure otherwise what you're trying to glue....See MoreSliding glass patio doors...
Comments (5)Anniemac830. As discussed above, Pella has this design. I have 6 sets of 6' wide Pella XO Proline sliding patio doors that were installed in 2000. They are aluminum clad on the exterior, wood interior. They each have a sliding screen on the interior. There is a secondary footbolt locking device available for the sliding glass portion (as Michael Menn stated). Google "Pella sliding door footbolt" for pics. They are a reasonable price for a solution that may help you. The primary lock is the handle latch itself. Most of the footbolt devices were installed to be used when the slider is completely closed (as in the old days of placing a rod/bar in the track); however, when I installed a patio dog door, I was able to move the secondary footbolt to lock the glass in a 12" open position to accommodate the dog door panel. Technically, one could place several "brackets" in different positions on the interior of the slider and the one footbolt would lock the glass at the bracket position. In regards to possible intruders, the "locked" position of the open glass portion would need to be small, but still allows some aeration through the screen. BTW, Millworkman: I come across MANY of your posts and value your advice greatly! Kudos for being an avid contributor!!...See MoreM&K Krueger
