Old-fashioned Impatiens - Busy Lizzie
Comments (117)Currently 23 inches high. It was 3 tiny stems 3 months ago. They do exceptionally well with grow lights. Experimenting with different LED spectrums I found that red and white promote fast growth, thick stems and branching between leaf stems. Purple lighting promotes compact growth and large deep green leaves....See MoreCuttings of mystery tree available soon
Comments (8)Good news folks. Dad said he can bring a good quantity of cuttings with him to Washington for me [what a trooper, huh?] Therefore there should be quite a few to go around. For people offering cuttings swaps, what I think I might do is have [at least some of] you send cuttings to my Dad in San Diego instead of me. This is because rather than yank out his tree, we're planning to do as Axier... grafting onto a full sized fig tree, and it's exactly my dad's situation; size of the tree as well as that the current variety needs more heat to ripen than the local microclimate can supply. I think I talk to my dad and Jon, to see both what varieties he might like as well as figuring out what will do well in his coastal climate. When I see Dad on Thursday I'll talk to him about it. Axier, I finished reading your excellent description of grafting onto a full sized fig tree. This is going to help my father immensely. Being inspired, I made a first draft of the Spanish>English translation. Check your F4F private messages, I cut and pasted it into the message body....See MoreWho likes old-fashioned, once blooming flowers?
Comments (25)Ever since I was 10 yrs. old and my mother gave me my own patch to garden in I loved all the old fashioned perennials. Hollyhocks , Delphiniums, cup and saucer canterburybells, coralbells, you get the idea. So In every place I have lived that has been my aim. Right now I have some early clematis, coralbells, columbines, peonies, and a few roses blooming. The japanese weeping cherry, apple trees, lilacs, and few daffodils and crocus I had were out earlier. The difficulty was getting a balance for that hot August time period when most things are worn out, and the japanese beetles are after the roses that bloom then. Hydrangeas help and the echinacea, and late flowering clematis. It's like conducting a symphony, trying to get the most out of each season! roseberri...See Moreold fashioned busy lizzie (tall gangly variety pink flowers)
