Comments (11)gardendawgie We live in Monson, MA. My son bought me for Mothers a few years ago, what the pet store told him were 4 Koi, turned out to be 1 Koi and 3 Comets, the rodents of the aqua world. They started to breed and never stopped I have to have over 100 fish. Everytime I pull some out to dump in the compost pile I feel so badly I put them back. I can't even give them away, the pet stores don't want them nor do farm supply places with ponds, we give them to the kids for their fish tanks but that doesn't make a dent. And let me tell you they winterize really well. When the ice melts we pray for half and get double. My goal for the end of fall is all the gold fish go. I spoke to this guy that specializes in ponds and koi he said when the bomb hits there will be two things left in the world cockroaches and goldfish :) Some of them are beautiful though, the 3 originals are huge I wish I could keep them but obviously they are the breeders. Caavonldy: Red Eared Sliders are native to the south and should never be hybernated outside in the winter. We always took ours back in the house at the beginning of Sept back out end of May, painters can be wintered outside. The pet stores like Petco will tell you they live outdoors year round but this is untrue. They will get pneuomina and die. If you decided to get another turtle check out redearslider form they are really cool people to talk to. I'm always tempted to get a few more but boy are they a lot of work....See MoreFungal Gnats/Mosquito Bits Application?
Comments (4)Heavy infestations of fungus gnat larvae can truly cause problems for containerized plants. They feed on the tender roots. Bt is eaten by the LARVAE, not the gnats. The larvae subsequently develop a diseased (by the bacterium) intestinal system and die. No larvae means no adults flitting around laying eggs and annoying you. I've not used the pelletized Bt, but don't see why it couldn't be used the same way as the round mosquito dunks. Put a small amount in your watering containers and allow to soak over night in water. Use THAT water on watering day for the next several times that you water. Don't water more than you usually would. As far as the bird bath goes, it can be simply rinsed out every other day or so and no mosquito niaids will have time to emerge as adults. Warning labels like that are on just about anything you use. Look at your shampoo bottle. If the labels were not present, and someone took it upon himself to drink or eat something not intended for drinking or eating, then the lawsuits would be never ending. Besides, just because a product is considered 'safe' and 'natural', does NOT mean that doesn't have hazards when used improperly. You should consider the underlying cause of the fungus gnat infestation at some point in the future. Switching to a coarse, fast draining potting medium will be a huge step in halting further problems without Bt, as will making sure you aren't watering excessively....See MoreStoring rain water and mosquito larvae
Comments (1)Mosquito dunks....See MoreAnyone tried mosquito sprays/barriers made of garlic?
Comments (39)We used a garlic oil/citrus oil mix that was proprietary to Terminix for 3 years, it worked fantastic. It was applied to the trees/planting beds around the perimeter of our yard. Reportedly the citrus attracts mosquitoes, once ingested the garlic destroys their digestive system. Initially it took several weeks to really notice a difference but once it took effect, this stuff worked outstanding. We live in a heavily wooded lot with a small stream that tends to leave pockets of standing water here and there, as well as about 100 yards from a very large lake. It worked great and had no adverse effects on my dog. For whatever reason, Terminix discontinued it in favor of the "traditional" toxic chemical Deltamethrin, which is supposed to work much more effectively and much faster. We've had 2 applications this month so far and the mosquitoes are as bad as we've seen since before we hired Terminix the first time. I'm going to give it another month and if I do t see a reduction in activity, we're going to terminate Terminix in favor of a garlic oil......See Morebob64
