Wild Violets Infestation!
Comments (3)I went through the same problem last year. Digging them up doesn't work because all it takes is missing one little peice of the root and they come back. Triclopyr does ok but you have to be persistant and spot spray the violets every 2 weeks. Once you get them under control use a small paint brush and apply glyphosate to each leaf. Yes, it's time consuming but works. Like I said, I fought them all summer last year before spraying the enitre lawn with glyphosate and doing a complete renovation in September. So far there are none in the lawn although I have seen them in the wooded area behind my back yard and those just get sprayed to keep them from spreading. Good luck because you do have a long battle ahead of you. Once you get rid of them keeping the lawn thick and healthy is the best prevention. Proper mowing, watering, and fertilizing is the key....See MoreMy favorite plant & wild violet??
Comments (3)Hi, Since you are in Washington DC you may have luck finding people selling species violets at one of your area violet shows. I would expect that they will be sometime next spring. Otherwise, the only place I know of and know the reputation of would be Pat's Pets. I don't believe that they ship in the winter so you will need to wait until next year. They sell quite a few species violets. In the USA Pat's Pets Pat's Pets Species In Canada: I know nothing about this company except that they sell violets. Because they are in Canada it may be more expensive because you will need a Phytosanitary Certificate, which will cost you more. Comments (39)Hi! I notice most of this thread is 9 years old and i wonder if you folks are still here, reading this discussion makes me happy. I was researching if i could transplant iris, black eyed Susan, bergamot, and coneflowers into my damp sunny front yard violet patch and expect them to thrive, and I'm going to try it! @Hu of 5 months ago, that would be really pretty, columbine with violets. IDK if it would work but I will try it too after the hardy stuff establishes! My goal is to make a privacy screen so I feel less exposed in my front yard. I want it dense with always something blooming. Right now I have a big forsythia on one end, hollies on the other, and a 100yo rose bush in the middle. I want to be able to put a hammock between the apple trees without my neighbors leering at me. Zone 6 NE KY!...See MoreUse of plastic to get rid of wild violet?
Comments (5)If you keep cutting or pulling the leaves, the rhizome will eventually weaken and die, but it might take all season. I have a lot of violets, and I'm resolved to live with them and keep them from over-running everything. Besides the rhizome that can grow on the surface of the ground or buried a foot deep, they reseed prolifically. I learned to recognize the seedlings so I can pull them when they're still tiny and fragile. Whoever coined the term "shrinking violet" never gardened with these guys!...See MoreVioletvamp
