Comments (27)I planted my Tanenashi persimmon tree 3-4 years ago and it had a very little growth since then, I mean 1-2 new small branches per year but gave 3-4 fruits every year. This year it grows like crazy, doubled size but dropped the only fruit. The only thing I did different this year is I fertilized it every 3 months with citrus fertilizer. maybe next year... :) Ana Ana...See MoreAnyone in TN Grow Either of These Trees?
Comments (9)Brandon, I have read that Franklinia is VERY susceptible to phythoptera (sp) and that due to extensive cultivation of cotton in the past most soils are infected with it. I know it is a naturally occurring pathogen, infecting a diverse number of species. They are certainly not common in MidTenn, I don't believe I have seen one here. The largest one I've ever seen is (was?) at a nursery in Fairfield County CT. Probably 12-15' tall in the early '80's. At that size the plant was kinda open and a little lanky, but overall healthy and bloomed heavily from August to hard frost. As far as monkeypuzzle/China fir, I think that is a local thing. Cunninghamia was fairly common in these parts before the '85 freeze took most of them out.I think the average person just knew them as monkeypuzzle, and probably never heard of Araucaria araucana- the 'real' monkeypuzzle....See MoreDo you grow Persimmons?
Comments (5)I've grown the astringent type for years and love their very sweet fruit. They are beautiful care free trees in Texas (no spraying required), start fruiting when fairly young and produce a big fall crop. You can wrap the individual fruit in newspaper, put them in a box in a cool place and eat through the winter as they ripen. I now have a young tree of the Tamopan variety which I purchased at Fanick's Nursery in San Antonio. Here is a link that might be useful: About persimmons ......See Morebrandon7 TN_zone7
