Late planted broccoli survived winter, now what?
Comments (2)Mine was planted in October (South Georgia). Started harvesting around Thanksgiving. It has been unusually cold here, many nights in the 20's or low 30's...I've lost only 3 plants so far (out of about 35 or so.) Still harvesting some broccoli; not great amounts but enough! If what happened last year happens again...once it warms up a bit, the plants should start producing again. By mid March of last year, we were getting LOTS of broccoli, enough for us & to give away. I would think there is most likely broccoli in your near future!...See MoreWinter survival of marginally hardy plants
Comments (6)a-HA! I looked up his nursery and it's in Raleigh NC. Which is inland enough to experience a freeze in winter, but a fairly short winter, compared to us. I bet most of us are already siting our borderline zone plants to take advantage of shrubs for winter protection. For example, I'm growing some antique climbing roses which are supposed to be OK to zone 6. I've planted them on the south side of tall cedar posts (to eventually grow up those posts) and also along the north side of a fenced garden, to benefit from the high hedge-y tangle on the other side of that north fence. For herbaceous perennials (such as hostas, ferns and daylilies) I'm letting them survive facing north, with a high concrete wall to their south; and they seem to do OK there. But those perennials are not borderline for this zone. --change of subject: it's pouring down rain right now and maybe that'll cool off things outside. Pleasant here, with the AC on. Comments (5)P. Foetida Hardiness: USDA zone 9 B - 11. Propagation: seeds. Culture: full sun / light shade, well drained soil. Plant in frost free areas. The genus Passiflora (passion flowers, passion fruit) contains about 350 vine species that live in warm or tropical habitats. Only one species, Passiflora foetida, is thought to be a potentially carnivorous plant. When the plant flowers, it makes glandular bracts. Digestive enzymes have been found inside the plant's tissues, but not on the bract surfaces....See MoreCan Tomatoes survive thru winter?
Comments (21)I've never lived in Miami, but I've looked at UV indexes and it seems Miami has the highest out of anywhere in the country, probably. So, it should be easier to sunburn there than just about everywhere else. Plants can struggle in UV rays, but blue tomatoes should get really blue, and the produce should be extra nutritious. The UV index might be more of a problem than the heat, is what I'm thinking. Florida is generally pretty warm, but the highs aren't super high compared to some areas. However, they may be more consistently high. Tell me if I'm wrong, please. I'm curious about Miami weather. I know weather companies don't always report what it seems to be, too....See MoreSmokyMist
