Vine for Huge Block Wall - Full AZ Sun
Comments (17)Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. After reading more on here and talking to others, I think Cats' Claw is what I'm going to go with on the back wall. I'm planning on planting it on the ledge where you can see some of the round bushes and ocatillos. A few follow-up questions: 1.How far down do the roots grow? 2. Will they be able to go under the footing of the smaller (3-4') wall in front? I have a pool going in there this year. 3. Are the roots strong enough to cause problems with a pool? 4. Will they even be able to travel that far? 5. Can you control where Cat Claw grows? I want it to just grow up the wall, not OUT horizontally over the rocks. 6. How far apart should I space them 7. What size should I buy? 1 gallon? 5 gallon? Thanks again! This post was edited by anthemaz on Sat, Apr 6, 13 at 15:09...See MoreHuge Vining Tree?
Comments (12)The link opens fine for me, but I can't tell much about anything from the picture. Various leaves show here and there, but I can't tell if any of the vine's leaves are pictured. To identify plants, it helps to have a close up picture of leaves and leaf arrangement, flowers and fruit (if possible), and bark as well as overall form. Maybe most of that was impossible, in this case, with the height of the plant and photographic equipment on hand, but it would probably make an ID possible if we had more to go on....See MoreIt's So Dry--Autumn Rains A Huge Disappointment
Comments (3)Dawn, here in Adair co we are beginning to dry out after a much much wetter than normal spring and summer. My total for the year is just over 60" as I posted before. However we've had very little rain in Oct and Nov, only about 3" total. Then this a.m. an inch of snow melted before noon and dampened the leaves a bit which was a relief as we were beginning to fear fire. But an inch of snow is equal to only .20" rain I think. DH wanted to put up the hoses, but I told him I needed to water blueberries and azaleas. Here's hoping things change soon. I fear another winter like 05-06. Comments (4)Cut the vines near the ground (maybe 2") to kill everything above that point. Take out the vine above that cut as far as you can reach and burn it. I'm not 100% environmentally correct, so I would paint the vine's stump with Green Light's cut vine and stump killer, which can be easily controlled and doesn't take much per plant. An alternative may be to follow up at least weekly and burn any new shoots back to the stump until you starve the root to death. I've used both methods. It's possible that if you try to remove the living root system and miss some, each bit will become a new plant, multiplying your problem. Good luck....See Morecannahavana
