I really need some help with mail-ordering plants
Comments (12)Garden Watchdog can often be a little off the mark. For example, House of Wesley has a terrible rating. I have ordered from House of Wesley for 20+ years and the ONLY problem that I have EVER had from them is one year, 2 strawberry plants out of 100+ never leafed out. They sent replacements that fall. Like any nursery, it is the customer's responsibility to order early, like February or before, in order to receive the plants in a timely manner before it gets too hot to ship plants safely to the customer's home. The plants from them arrive in bare root dormant condition and appear like brown sticks. Of course they do, they are dormant. Plant them in a pot in the shade, keep well watered and they should break dormancy within a couple months. I've seen it many times over, from various nurseries. People do not give their plants enough time to break dormancy. They stop watering them and then complain that the the plants died. Remember that these plants are dug up in the fall. After they are planted in the spring, they have a whole winter's worth of roots to grow before putting out leaves. Some plants, such as apples and other rose relatives, can grow roots in days, while others, such a Paulownia can take over 2 months. I have also ordered plants from nurseries that get great ratings on Garden Watchdog with dismal results. If in pots, the dirt may be infested with bugs, or if bare root dormant trees, absolutely no packing material to keep the roots moist. Etc. Etc. Sorry about rambling, but Garden Watchdog needs to be taken with a large grain of salt....See MoreWarning: Beware of ordering from Hirts Greenhouse
Comments (16)I recently ordered two plants from hirts garden. A peperomia prostrata (string of turtles) and a ceropegia linearis woodii (string of DAGGERS). The string of daggers is a close cousin of the string of hearts plant which I'm familiar with as I have 3 large plants of the HEARTS variety and one DAGGER variety that I have been growing for a while now (not from Alan Hirts but from actual honest sellers). For starters, these plants are EXPENSIVE for tiny 2" pots. So my expectations are that they are gonna be good investments. Fast forward to receiving the goods. Instead of what I ordered (string of TURTLES & string of DAGGERS), this guy sends me 2 string of HEARTS. After several back and forth emails with photos, he finally Sends a partial refund for string of turtles only because he says "What a joke.............String of Daggers is the same genus and species as String of Hearts." Alan you are a joke and a scam artist at best. Don't buy from this guy. There are a lot of sellers who are honest and customer service oriented and will work with you. I've been buying plants online for a couple of years now and have had good luck with many online sellers including Etsy shops. I've never had quite an experience as I've had with Alan hirts. You should google his shop reviews too, they are eye opening...wish I had seen sooner before my purchase as mid-shipments of plants are a regular occurrence. If you do decide to take a chance with Alan hirts, don't buy direct from his website. Take your risk through his Etsy or eBay shop because if you do (and you will) run into a problem with this guy, you can dispute it at least without dealing with his shadiness directly. Good luck to whomever decides to try your luck with hirts garden. Didn't say I didn't warn you...See Morenational home gardening club is a scam!!!
Comments (4)My mother keeps receiving threatening notices from this company that she owes money for their membership. They state that she enrolled in February but, she fell and was the hospital and rehab during that month and has since moved to assisted living. She's still sharp of mind and insists she never enrolled and, since she was in the hospital, I'm sure she didn't. Additionally, she's been using a walker for at least two years and has RA and has not been able to garden in years. The company states they sent free gifts including gas cards, magazine, free member gifts and knee pads. I've been getting her mail since February and never received such items. I chose to ignore the notice last month for I've received two other similar "club" invoices also indicating she enrolled during the month she was in the hospital. I figured they're all scams trying to take advantage of elderly people. This month's invoice threatens to turn her over to collections! Well, just go ahead and try! These people are the scum of the earth!...See MoreHouse of Wesley
Comments (6)BEWARE, DO NOT ORDER FROM HOUSE OF WESLEY. THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM. 90% of what they send you will die, they will not give you a refund, only a replacement which will also die. I have a small claims judgment against them but they still refuse to refund my money. Legal action, BBB and the rest does not bother this company, they are skirting the law and they know it. This is not an honest or ethical company, and they are a disgrace to the gardening community. TELL YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS TO BEWARE ALSO....See Morevirginialily
