saving seeds in a small garden
Comments (3)If you are growing more than one variety of a vegetable, that can be an issue for seed saving in a small garden. Vegetables which are easily cross pollinated must have large isolation distances if the seed is to be kept pure. With some, such as tomatoes, this is not a problem. With others, such as squash, a small garden doesn't provide enough separation. In that case, other measures must be taken when growing more than one variety. The best book for understanding seed saving, IMO, is Carol Deppe's Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties. It may tell you more than you want to know, but it focuses on the special circumstances of the home gardener. It is a good read too, because of the many illustrative stories she relates. Susan Ashworth's Seed to Seed is probably recommended more often. I own it too, but it is a fairly dry reference source and a lot of the data, such as isolation distances, are compiled from agricultural research, not from home gardening experiences. Comments (2)digdirt, I took the addy directly from the article. I'm not sure why it doesn't go there now. My sole intention was to share information about seeds with conscientious growers. This looked like an appropriate forum for the topic, controversial as it may be. I'm new here, so if I've offending anyone for posting inappropriately, I apologize. After researching this issue however, I certainly do not apologize for being non-objective. Thank you for the feed back....See MoreSaving Seed from Weird Gardening Season

Comments (1)Hi Nick, You will be able to save seed from the Tomatoes, black-eye peas, sweet/snow peas, and eggplant if you are only doing one variety of eggplant. There is still a chance of crossing but it is low. You can grow beans and save seeds too. Two peppers in close proximity will cross easily. The others, sunflower, broccoli, cucumber, watermelon, yellow squash and zucchini rely on insect pollination to produce fruit or are heavily visited by insects so you won't able to save seed.
