Have any of you purchased roses from QVC...if so, were you happy
Comments (3)I've done it. The bareroot roses came quite dry, and I think I was only able to revive two of the six they sent. Of the two I revived, one was mislabeled -- the one marked "Marie Osmond" was really Purple Heart. I still don't know if there actually is any rose named "Marie Osmond." The other one I got was the Emerald rose, which is Cottage Farms in-house name for Mint Julep. That one was true to variety, and I'm glad I have it, and was able to revive one of the two they sent. The small potted roses they sent were nice plants, however, and mine were not mislabeled. All of the ones I got from QVC were actually Cottage Farms roses, which can be usually obtained less expensively on the Cottage Farms site, except they don't sell roses in "collections." Here is a link that might be useful: Cottage Farms website...See MoreIt must be Spring because Cottage farms is on QVC
Comments (5)According to the Roberta's gardening representative on QVC, peonies DO grow in Florida! Gosh I am going to get some! This is so misleading. First they danced around the issue. The host asked if there was anywhere they wouldn't grow. He said they are cold hardy. Then a caller who purchased them said "I hope these will grow in Florida." He asked where she was in Florida and she told him Clearwater. He said there wouldn't be any problem. I bet if she had said Key West he would have given the same answer. On the QVC website it says they can be grown in zones 3-8. It costs $36 shipped....See MoreSuccess with a home farm stand? Help and advice much appreciated!
Comments (9)I agree with the above post. I have been homesteading for 5 years and this is my first year growing a market garden so my advise isn't coming from someone with years of experience. We have 3 mini goats, 1 mini donkey and 30 chickens on 4 acres. Half of the land wooded, half is cleared and level. In past years we have grown a large portion of our food in 500 sq/ft of raised garden beds. This spring season we added another 1000 sq/ft and plan to add another 1000 by fall. I sell eggs, chickens(live), seedlings and some produce to friends and neighbors. I would advise you not to diversify too much on such a small parcel of land if you're trying to earn a profit. Choose something that resonates with you and go that route. If the market is there I would suggest selling seedlings and value-added goods that can sometimes be prepared in your home such as pickles. The milk and eggs from 2 goats and 8 chickens may be enough to give extra to friends but not enough to sell. I'm not saying you shouldn't get them, you should! But keep the eggs and milk for you and use their lovely manure to improve your soil. If you are determined to profit off them buy and in-demand breed and sell your kids, fertile eggs and chicks. You could get 2-6 kids a year and sell them from $100-$400 each. I have a breed of chicken that I sell eggs of for $6 each! I, for the life of me, can't find the link now but I recall a very nice article about a family who earned $25k a year from their 1/8 acre urban farm. They sold all their produce off their front porch. I really hope something out of that rambling mess is useful to you! Good luck with everything and keep us posted on your progress!...See MoreQVC plants
Comments (0)Hello all, I love to "Q" do you?? Well there is an exception. I do not purchase plants from QVC unless there is a REALLY good price and plant size. Let me explain. Cottage Farms - one of the plant sellers on QVC has the smallest plants most in 2-4 inch pots. I have found the past 2-3 years that these same plants can be purchased from Lowe's and Home Depot for less AND the plants are larger. I purchased Artic Kiwi male and female plants from QVC because I thought they were not available locally. I received two 2 inch pots with one plant in each. This is what I expected -but- I did not expect a plant that is less than 1 year old and only 4 inches tall with almost no root mass. I later found the same variety Kiwi at Home Depot in a 1 gallon pot for 50% less when you factor in the shipping fees from QVC. I purchased Cottage Farms Chandler Blueberry plants from QVC because I liked the idea of having big blueberries the size of cherrys. I received three 4 inch pots with nice healthy plants - small plants. I later found Chandler Blueberries at Lowe's in 1 gallon pots - yada yada yada - less money for bigger older plants. Roberta's Unique Gardens This plant vendor on QVC has some unique plants and many citrus tree varieties. This summer I found many of the 'rare & hard to find" (not) Roberta's plants available locally for less. In all honesty I must say that Roberta's plants are usually bigger and better grown than those of Cottage Farms. I have a Meyer Lemon and a Kumquat tree from Roberta's that were very good size when I received them. Word to the wise - shop locally when you see a plant that you want on QVC. You might find that same plant for 50% less and no shipping cost. DL...See Morecapemaimie_comcast_net
